The Running Man star Katy O’Brian states that Edgar Wright’s remake is “totally different” from the Arnold Schwarzenegger film.
Wright’s The Running Man is set to be released this coming November. This adaptation of the 1982 Stephen King novel features Glen Powell as Ben Richards, Josh Brolin as Dan Killian, Colman Domingo as Bobby Thompson, and O’Brian as Laughlin.
What did Katy O’Brian say about The Running Man?
In an interview with Empire Magazine, O’Brian mentions that the new version of The Running Man has very little in common with the 1987 film adaptation directed by Paul Michael Glaser, which starred Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards.
She elaborated, “I went back and watched it after we filmed, and I was like, ‘This is totally different.’ It feels very contained compared to this, which feels so vast…There’s definitely something about being trapped and contained that’s thrilling and nerve-wracking, but then something about being in the open – and being a target in the open, which we feel a lot more in this version – is horrific. I love seeing that difference in dynamic, but I tend to think that this version is a little more amped up.”
She also commented on her character, who participates in the titular Running Man game show, saying, “I played it as if it’s rock’n’roll. In this world where you’re given so few opportunities to exist if you weren’t born in the right place, you can have a certain type of mindset. You can give up, put your head down. You can be a rebel. You can go with the flow.”
“…I play a lot of Dungeons & Dragons, so I was thinking ‘chaotic neutral’, moving on to ‘chaotic evil’. I just wanted it to be a person who is going to live on their own terms.”
The Running Man will premiere in United States theaters on November 14, 2025, from Paramount Pictures.
