The Vampire Diaries Creator Explains Taylor Swift’s Absence

Taylor Swift’s name has long been associated with The Vampire Diaries since the show’s debut in 2009. However, despite years of speculation, the pop star never made an appearance on the series. Earlier, co-creator Kevin Williamson admitted that he wanted to cast Swift as a vampire. This sparked speculation that she might portray Lexi Branson, Stefan Salvatore’s best friend. Now, in the book I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries, co-creator Julie Plec explained that the team never actually considered Swift for the role.

Julie Plec reveals why Taylor Swift didn’t appear in The Vampire Diaries

While discussing the rumored Taylor Swift cameo in The Vampire Diaries, Julie Plec shared, “The CW did ask us if we wanted to do a Taylor Swift cameo, and we said no. It didn’t feel grounded. This isn’t 7th Heaven, where Taylor can show up and do a free concert at the high school and make it feel somehow real. It will take us all out of it; it will take this very sort of timeless little community and make it feel too contemporary. If only I knew then what I know now about my love for Taylor.” (via ScreenRant)

She confirmed that Arielle Kebbel was always the choice for Lexi, after Kebbel originally auditioned for the role of Elena Gilbert.

Earlier, Nina Dobrev also recalled Swift’s connection to the show, telling E! News, “I remember at the very beginning, we heard that Taylor Swift was a fan of the show. And then the producers tried to write a role for her. It didn’t work out schedule-wise; obviously, she wasn’t on the show. But that was a surprising one.” (via Entertainment Weekly)

Notably, Kevin Williamson had admitted in the early days of the show that he was “desperate” to cast Swift, saying, “I cannot tell you how hard I’m trying to get her. I would kill to have her on the show!” However, it seems Swift’s rising fame and busy schedule prevented her appearance (via E! Online). Kebbel went on to portray Lexi in several episodes, becoming a fan-favorite character who remained a recurring presence in the show.
