In a past interview with JoBlo, McQuarrie reflected on how The Way of the Gun laid the groundwork for his future work on the Mission: Impossible series. He shared, “The Way of the Gun was the first step in a long and ongoing journey toward my ultimate goal, which is simply one of understanding how to be understood – how to make the audience look where I want, hear what I want, and feel what I want. This film taught me that the audience doesn’t work for me; I work for them.

He elaborated, “The greatest irony is that I never set out to be an action director. My aspirations were to create historical dramas like Valkyrie (and I still do!). When Tom Cruise saw The Way of the Gun, he immediately recognized my understanding of clarity and geography. Despite its flaws, and being a film that leans heavily on dialogue, he saw the visual storyteller within me. The Way of the Gun didn’t just prepare me; it secured me the opportunity. Just as I had done for Ryan Phillippe, Tom provided me a chance that no one else would dare to give, allowing me the freedom to explore my vision.

The highly anticipated Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is set to release in theaters on May 23rd. Early reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, particularly praising the breathtaking stunt work, although some critics felt that the film could benefit from a tighter runtime.
