2025 was a significant year for Tom Cruise, who portrayed Ethan Hunt for the final time in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Cruise’s career began with primarily original roles, but in recent years, it has focused on franchise work, including reprising his role as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. It has been confirmed that he will return to the role of the iconic pilot in a third Top Gun film, although Cruise has other projects to prioritize before he takes to the skies again. Later this year, he will star in his first original action movie in nine years with Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The film features other prominent actors such as Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) and Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon).
One of Cruise’s original signature roles emerged 30 years ago in Jerry Maguire, a drama about a highly successful sports agent who loses his wealth and title, prompting him to venture into the industry with only his top client. Cuba Gooding Jr. co-stars alongside Cruise as his famous client, winning an Oscar for his performance. Cameron Crowe wrote and directed Jerry Maguire, which received satisfactory scores of 84% from critics and 79% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was a risk given its $50 million budget, but it proved worthwhile by grossing over $270 million at the box office. Cruise also received an Oscar nomination for his role as the titular character, while Cameron Crowe’s script, which took four years to write, earned an Oscar nod.
