Tom Cruise’s Time-Loop Sci-Fi Thriller Still Captivates Viewers

2025 was a big year for Tom Cruise, who played Ethan Hunt for one final time in the eighth Mission: Impossible movie, The Final Reckoning. Cruise kicked off his career years ago with more original roles, but in the last few years, it’s been mostly franchise work, like Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. Cruise has even been tapped to star in a third Top Gun movie, but there are some other projects he’s chosen to prioritize over his next military epic. Later this year, he’ll star in his first original action movie in years with Digger, which comes from Alejandro G. Iñárittu. The film co-stars other major figures, like Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) and Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), and it’s been set for release on October 2.

It’s nearly impossible to pinpoint exactly what the most famous movie of Tom Cruise’s career is, but many would argue that title belongs to Edge of Tomorrow. The 2014 sci-fi masterpiece co-stars Emily Blunt, and it follows a man stuck in a time loop, living the same day over and over again after his death. Solving the loop is the key to winning the war against an alien species that threatens to wipe out all life on Earth. More than 10 years removed from a theatrical run that saw Edge of Tomorrow gross over $380 million, the film has resurfaced in the Apple TV top 10 in several countries around the world. Edge of Tomorrow earned scores of 91% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The sci-fi epic is not currently streaming anywhere in America, but it will likely return to one of the big platforms soon.

The People’s Choice Awards-iversary — The Collider TV Quiz!

On this date in 1975, the first-ever People’s Choice Awards ceremony was held. Here are some notable PCA television winners from the last 51 years.

What Is Tom Cruise’s Highest-Grossing Movie?

The highest-grossing movie of Tom Cruise’s career is Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed over $1.4 billion at the global box office. It’s the only one of Cruise’s movies to gross over $1 billion, and seven of the next eight films on the list of his highest-grossing movies all belong to the Mission: Impossible franchise. The only non-Mission: Impossible movie to land in the top 10 other than Top Gun: Maverick is War of the Worlds, the 2005 alien film that co-stars a young Dakota Fanning along with Tim Robbins.

Check out Edge of Tomorrow on VOD platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates and coverage of Cruise’s future projects.
