Understanding Nicko McBrain’s Decision to Retire from Iron Maiden’s Touring Schedule
In December, McBrain made the heartfelt announcement regarding his retirement from touring with Iron Maiden after wrapping up the band’s Future Past tour. The 73-year-old drummer faced a personal health challenge when he suffered a stroke in January 2023, but he impressively returned to the stage just four months later. However, McBrain candidly shared that his drumming skills had not fully recovered to the level they were at prior to his stroke.

“And it ain’t the old Nicko — it’s not the old one by a long shot,” McBrain reflected in 2024, acknowledging the changes he has experienced. “But at least it’s part of me. My bandmates, bless their hearts, including Steve Harris and the rest of the guys, said, ‘If you can’t do something in a song, we just won’t do that song.’”
McBrain shared insights into his decision-making process during a conversation with Chaoszine, where he explained, “I kind of made my mind up when we got to North America and talked to the boys about it, mainly Steve and then the management.” The supportive response from his bandmates confirmed that they understood his situation and were willing to accommodate his needs following the stroke.
Despite stepping back from touring with Iron Maiden, McBrain expressed his intention to remain an integral part of the Iron Maiden family while exploring other business ventures and opportunities. His passion for music and connection to his bandmates remain strong.
“Touring with Iron Maiden for the past 42 years has been an incredible journey,” he stated with gratitude. “To my bandmates, you made it a dream come true, and I love you! I look ahead with excitement and great hope! I’ll see you soon, may God bless you all, and, of course, ‘Up the Irons!'”
