Fans have eagerly anticipated the release of writer and director Macon Blair’s innovative remake of the cult classic Troma film, The Toxic Avenger (you can watch it HERE). Filming wrapped up in 2021, and excitement surged when a teaser trailer was unveiled in late 2023, coinciding with its world premiere screening. Fortunately, our wait is almost over! At the beginning of this year, it was announced that Cineverse secured distribution rights for the film, aiming for a broad release. We’ve now learned that the official theatrical premiere is slated for August 29, and before that, Toxie will make a splash at San Diego Comic-Con with a Hall H panel scheduled from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM on Thursday, July 24th!
Three years prior, the Motion Picture Association ratings board classified the film with an R rating due to “strong violence and gore, pervasive language, sexual references, and brief graphic nudity.” However, fans should rejoice, as the Toxic Avenger remake is set to be released unrated, suggesting that any scenes previously cut for the R rating have been restored for the final version.
Macon Blair’s reimagined version of The Toxic Avenger revolves around Winston Gooze, a quintessential underdog who toils as a janitor at the Garb-X health club. His life takes a dark turn when he is diagnosed with a terminal illness, which can only be treated through an exorbitant medical procedure that his avaricious employer flatly refuses to fund. Frustrated and desperate, Winston chooses to take matters into his own hands, leading him to rob his company. In a twist of fate, he tumbles into a vat of toxic waste, ultimately transforming him into a grotesque yet heroic monster on a mission to seek justice against those who have wronged him.
In this thrilling retelling, the talented Peter Dinklage takes on the role of Winston Gooze, supported by an impressive cast that includes Kevin Bacon portraying the nefarious corporate tyrant Bob Garbinger, and Elijah Wood as Bob’s brother Fritz Garbinger, a character reminiscent of Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show blended with the Penguin from Danny DeVito’s portrayal. Other notable cast members include Taylour Paige as the determined investigative reporter and vigilante detective JJ Doherty, Jacob Tremblay as Winston’s stepson Wade, Jonny Coyne as a mysterious criminal figure, Sarah Niles as a corrupt city official, Julia Davis in an undisclosed role, and Blair himself as a character named Dennis.
While Dinklage lends his voice to Toxie after Winston undergoes his transformation, he does not physically portray the character. Instead, the role of Toxie is brought to life by Luisa Guerreiro, an accomplished actor and movement artist, who performs under the intricate makeup and costume. This creative choice allows for a compelling and visually striking interpretation of the beloved character.
The production of the Toxic Avenger remake took place in Bulgaria, showcasing the collaboration between Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, alongside Legendary Entertainment. This partnership has generated significant buzz, particularly among fans of the original cult classic.
