Blair’s rendition of The Toxic Avenger features the talented Peter Dinklage in the role of Winston Gooze, a character who embodies the archetype of a stereotypical weakling. Winston works as a janitor at the Garb-X health club and faces a dire diagnosis of a terminal illness. Unfortunately, he discovers that the costly treatment necessary for his survival is being denied by his unscrupulous and power-hungry employer. Fueled by desperation and a desire for justice, Winston makes a bold decision to take matters into his own hands, leading him to rob his employer. This fateful choice results in him tumbling into a vat of toxic waste, where he undergoes a dramatic transformation into a grotesque yet heroic monster, determined to seek revenge on those who have wronged him while also trying to do good in the world.

Dinklage’s impressive performance is complemented by a star-studded cast, including the renowned Kevin Bacon, who portrays the malevolent corporate overlord Bob Garbinger. Additionally, Elijah Wood takes on the role of Bob’s brother, Fritz Garbinger, whose character is described as a blend of “Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Danny DeVito Penguin,” showcasing a unique and intriguing character dynamic. The film also features a group known as the Killer Nutz, a theatrical rock group whose stage presence is reminiscent of iconic bands like KISS or Alice Cooper, yet they harbor a dark secret as professional assassins. Other noteworthy cast members include Taylour Paige as the tenacious investigative reporter and vigilante detective JJ Doherty, Jacob Tremblay as Winston’s stepson Wade, and Jonny Coyne as a “shadowy criminal figure.” Sarah Niles plays a “corrupt city official,” while Julia Davis and director Macon Blair also contribute their talents to the film.
