“Trailblazer: New Song by Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert & Lainey Wilson”

The very first moment Reba McEntire listened to the touching ballad titled “Trailblazer,” she was overwhelmed with emotion and shed tears. Likewise, Lainey Wilson and Miranda Lambert experienced similar feelings as they collaborated on this heartfelt piece.

This talented trio is poised to unveil their poignant, mid-tempo ballad that pays homage to those who have paved the way for them, while also inspiring future generations. They will perform the song live at the ACM Awards on May 8. Following the performance, the song will be accessible on all major streaming platforms at 8 p.m. E.T. on Thursday.

Wilson and Lambert crafted the lyrics of this song alongside Brandy Clark on Lambert’s back porch, with the intention of creating a piece that they, along with McEntire, could sing in harmony together.

“We were brainstorming, thinking, ‘We’re writing a song with Reba — what direction should we take?’” reflects Lambert on Wednesday after their rehearsal at The Star in Frisco, Texas, during their exclusive joint interview. “While we were on set [of sitcom Happy’s Place], we were discussing, ‘What message should we convey as a trio? What do we want to express within just three minutes?’”

Ultimately, they aimed to create a country music song that honored their influences, specifically mentioning icons like “Dolly and Loretta, Patsy and Tammy as well,” and emphasizing the importance of passing down this legacy. “We were deep in conversation about how these legends have impacted me, and how to continue the tradition of blazing trails for others,” explains Wilson, who was the mastermind behind the title. “Each generation is tasked with continuing this legacy, but we must keep forging those paths for those who will follow.”

The trio also wanted to sprinkle in subtle references throughout the song that connect back to each artist’s journey. For instance, the lyrics feature “Kerosene,” a nod to one of Lambert’s most celebrated hits, while also referencing her roots in Louisiana, where Wilson hails from, and Oklahoma, McEntire’s birthplace.

“Our goal was to pay homage to each artist in a meaningful way,” states Lambert. “We aimed for a balance that would allow the tributes to feel organic, rather than overt—something that listeners would need to delve into to fully appreciate.”

Yet, they were also mindful of ensuring the song maintained a universal appeal that transcended music alone. “I envisioned this as a piece that a grandmother, her daughter, and a grandchild could enjoy together,” shares Wilson. “It’s not solely about the rich history of country music… If we fail to consider the audience we’re performing for, they won’t connect with our message.”

The creation of the song unfolded rapidly and felt, as Wilson describes it, as if it were divinely inspired. “When you’re in the midst of writing and experience that incredible feeling, it’s akin to a sensation of the Holy Spirit coursing through you. You feel it resonate throughout your entire being. We definitely felt that energy.”

When they finally shared the song with McEntire, the trio felt a mix of excitement and nerves, but their worries were unfounded. “I recall listening to it in my dressing room, and I couldn’t pinpoint a single flaw—every word resonated beautifully,” recalls McEntire. “It was truly remarkable. I was incredibly moved when I first heard it.” The three artists recorded the track together in Nashville, co-produced by McEntire and her longtime collaborator Tony Brown.

Friendship is another significant theme woven throughout the song, and it’s clear that the trio has forged deep connections. They share a delighted laugh when discussing their group text messages. “We can’t disclose the contents,” laughs Lambert, “It’s a bit cheeky!”

Their camaraderie is something that McEntire believes was not possible during her early career, largely due to the evolving landscape of technology.

“There’s a distinct difference between the current generation and those that came before, primarily due to the social aspects of our interactions,” explains McEntire. “With the advent of text messaging and emails, we have instant communication at our disposal, which was not the case when I started out. I appreciate how approachable things have become. Back in 1977, I would have never dreamed of initiating a conversation with Dolly Parton if she passed by me. I was just starting out, and she was a towering figure in the industry. I don’t know if it’s a matter of confidence, but I held her in such high esteem that she felt untouchable. Today, we share a bond that feels more like family, and I find that refreshing.”

The three artists emphasize the importance of their friendship, with McEntire identifying it as a key takeaway from “Trailblazer.” “We share a strong sense of camaraderie; we look out for one another. If someone is in need, the others are always there to assist. This is crucial. Many people perceive the industry as cutthroat and overly competitive, but there’s ample space in this business—and all industries—for everyone to thrive. We must support each other, sharing experiences and lessons learned. ‘Here’s what worked for me; perhaps it will resonate with you.’”

Within the song, there’s a poignant line that acknowledges those who “gave me a seat at the table.” “One of the very first individuals to welcome me was right there,” says Wilson, gesturing towards Lambert. “She made me feel included and was my biggest supporter. Too often, society attempts to create rivalry among women, but we’re here to demonstrate a different narrative.”

The group chat serves more than just humor; it also acts as a vital support network. “There are moments when you need someone to confide in during exhausting times,” reflects Wilson, glancing at McEntire. “I remember reaching out to you once, and you advised me, ‘Sometimes, you have to get up and sing for someone special. Sing for your sister, or whoever it may be.’ Those words resonate with me when I’m on stage and feel overwhelmed.”

“I recall at the conclusion of one of my lengthy Vegas engagements, I reached out to you,” Lambert adds, also looking at McEntire. “I was in tears as I prepared. I just wanted you to know how challenging that day felt. It’s reassuring to know I’m not facing this alone, as both of you understand what it’s like.”

When they perform “Trailblazer” at the ACM Awards tomorrow, their performance will resonate beyond their individual journeys. “It’s not solely about us,” emphasizes Lambert. “This song carries a message for young girls watching, or anyone who has a dream and seeks support from loved ones, reminding them they are not alone in their journey.”

And there are certainly more collaborations on the horizon. When asked if “Trailblazer” would be their last joint effort, McEntire responds with unwavering enthusiasm, “Absolutely not!” before the question is fully posed. “I adore performing alongside these remarkable women. They bring so much joy; their vocal talents blend beautifully with mine. Why wouldn’t we continue?”

Mark your calendars: the ACM Awards will stream live on Amazon Prime Video on May 8 at 8:00 p.m. E.T.
