The iconic Canadian rock band Triumph is set to make a highly anticipated comeback with a special three-song performance in Edmonton this Friday night. This memorable event is part of an exciting evening that will also feature the award-winning band, the Glorious Sons, as they perform prior to Game 2 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, where the Edmonton Oilers will face off against the Florida Panthers.
Triumph’s classic 1979 hit “Lay It on the Line” has gained renewed attention as it is being featured in promotional advertisements for this year’s NHL playoffs, courtesy of Rogers, the renowned Canadian cable television provider. The last time a Canadian team lifted the Stanley Cup trophy was back in 1993, when the legendary Montreal Canadiens triumphed over the Los Angeles Kings.
This performance marks a significant moment for the band, as their last full-scale public concert took place on July 11, 2008, at the Rocklahoma Festival. In 2019, they held an exclusive mini-set for fans that was filmed and later included in the 2021 documentary Triumph: Rock and Roll Machine, celebrating their enduring legacy in the rock music scene.
In a previous interview in 2020, bassist Mike Levine expressed some reservations about the band making a full-scale return to the live music scene. He stated, “The answer is probably not. But you never say never because you don’t know.” He elaborated on the physical challenges that come with age, saying, “I think we’re all getting on in years a little bit; there’s some physical issues that may just not make that possible. Playing three songs, that’s okay; we can do that. But playing a dozen songs, I’m not sure that would work on a big stage, because we’d all probably fall off the stage or something stupid.”
