Vivian Campbell Shares Positive Health Update from Def Leppard

Renowned Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell has provided an uplifting health update amid his ongoing 12-year battle with cancer. His recent surgery has necessitated a recovery period, which is why he was absent from the stage during a recent performance with his bandmates. While he recuperates, Phil Collen’s guitar technician, John Zocco, stepped in for him on January 20. Frontman Joe Elliott informed the audience that Campbell was undergoing ?some treatment for his cancer,? emphasizing the importance of support during challenging times.

In a heartfelt message shared through social media, Campbell expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and well-wishes he has received. He revealed that he was diagnosed with Hodgkin?s lymphoma several years ago and has recently undergone a successful bone marrow transplant as part of his treatment plan. ?It?s safe to say that thus far it?s been a very successful transplant!? he shared, offering hope and positivity to his fans.

He went on to state, ?I just have to keep my head down and my spirits up for the next 100 days of primary recovery,? signing off with ?A very happy Viv!? This resilient mindset is crucial for recovery and highlights the importance of maintaining a positive outlook in the face of adversity. If everything goes according to plan, Campbell is expected to make a triumphant return in late April, just in time for the kick-off of Def Leppard?s much-anticipated tour starting in Puerto Rico on May 15.

Vivian Campbell’s Determination to Continue Performing Despite Cancer Battle

Back in 2019, the talented guitarist, known for his work with Dio and Whitesnake, revealed that his 2013 diagnosis catalyzed a newfound drive to stay busy, even more so than before. He shared with Ultimate Guitar, ?I looked at my lifetime as being not this open-ended thing and [realized] that time is, indeed, very precious and every day should be celebrated.? This perspective underscores the importance of seizing the moment and cherishing life?s experiences.

?Even during the most challenging phases of my cancer treatment, including intense chemotherapy, I managed to tour with Def Leppard,? Campbell noted. He faced resistance from the band and management, who preferred he prioritize his treatment. ?I think that they really wanted me to stay at home and just concentrate on my treatments. Whereas for me, I would have considered that a death sentence,? he explained. His passion for music and performing is a testament to his enduring spirit and dedication to his craft.

Vivian Campbell believes that one?s identity is intrinsically linked to their pursuits in life. ?You are what you do in life. I?ve always been a guitar player, I?ve always been a musician, and nothing brings me more joy,? he asserted, highlighting the profound connection between his art and personal fulfillment.
