Weezer Takes the Stage at Coachella Following Bassist’s Tragedy

On April 9, Loudwire reported a shocking incident involving Jillian Lauren, the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, who was shot by police and subsequently booked for attempted murder. This news came just as Weezer was announced as a surprise addition to Coachella 2025. The band delivered a memorable performance at the festival yesterday, much to the delight of their fans.

Set List Highlights from Weezer’s Performance

The renowned three-day Coachella festival is taking place at the iconic Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California. On the second day, Weezer graced the Mojava stage in the afternoon, performing an exhilarating 12-song set. According to setlist.fm, the lineup included major hits such as “Hash Pipe,” “Island in the Sun,” “Say it Ain’t So,” and “Buddy Holly,” along with some lesser-known tracks like “Pork and Beans,” “Surf Wax America,” and “Perfect Situation. Interestingly, their performance exclusively featured songs from their first five albums, spanning from the 1994 debut Weezer (also known as The Blue Album) to 2005’s Make Believe.

As highlighted by Consequence, the band also delivered a powerful cover of Metallica’s legendary track “Enter Sandman,” which ignited a massive sing-along among the crowd. This electrifying moment was punctuated by a stunning guitar solo from frontman and guitarist Rivers Cuomo, who seamlessly transitioned into a brief tease of “Buddy Holly.”

Furthermore, Consequence observed that the band creatively adapted the introductory dialogue of “Undone – The Sweater Song,” allowing guitarist Brian Bell to acknowledge the Coachella audience while humorously mentioning an after-party in the dressing room of Green Day, who performed on the main stage the previous night. In a playful twist, Weezer changed the lyrics to “Beverly Hills,” shouting, “Living in Coachella, California” instead.

According to the L.A. Times, there was understandably no mention of the incident involving Lauren during the performance. In contrast, Shriner appeared on stage, pumping his fist and receiving a tremendous cheer from the enthusiastic crowd, which numbered in the thousands.

As reported by Variety, between performances of “Pork and Beans” and “Undone – The Sweater Song,” Cuomo expressed, “We were making the Weezer movie back in Los Angeles, but when Coachella called and asked if we could make a surprise appearance, we said ‘Heck yeah.’ It’s so great to be here with all you guys and let out all these emotions.”

Overall, Weezer’s set received overwhelming enthusiasm from the audience, and while many fans took to social media to express their excitement, there were some mixed reactions as well.

For instance, one user on X conveyed mild disappointment regarding the setlist: “Watching Weezer's Coachella performance. I have great memories of their music, but I often wonder how incredible they could have been had Rivers not ventured into pop. They have produced some good to great songs over the years, yet there was not a single song from 2010 or later in the set.” On April 10, another fan replied to Weezer’s post about their Coachella appearance, expressing excitement but also understanding if they decided not to perform, stating, “Sending all the love.”

Conversely, some reactions were notably more critical and harsh.

For example, one commenter queried, “When will the new album ‘Bullet Sponge Bitch’ be released?” Another joked, “I heard Weezer was going to cover ‘Who Shot the Sheriff’ at Coachella but decided against it. Haha, get it?” Meanwhile, another individual vehemently stated, “You’re fucking libtard idiots. I’ll never spend another dime on anything Weezer. And tell your bass player his hooker wife is going to prison for a very long time!”

Details on Shriner and Lauren’s Recent Incident

As previously mentioned, Loudwire reported that on April 8, police shot Lauren and subsequently booked her for attempted murder while they were pursuing suspects involved in a hit-and-run incident in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that the event occurred after the California Highway Patrol called for backup to locate three misdemeanor hit-and-run suspects who had fled into a residential area near the 134 Freeway and Figueroa Street.

Upon entering the backyard of a residence on the 5300 block of Waldo Place, officers encountered Lauren reportedly armed with a handgun. According to Loudwire, after refusing to comply with orders to drop the weapon, she pointed it at the officers. As a result, she was shot in the shoulder when officers returned fire. Following the incident, she was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of the non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Loudwire added that a 9-millimeter handgun was found at her residence, and police determined that Lauren had no involvement in the hit-and-run.

On April 10, Loudwire reported that Lauren was released on a $1 million bond, confirming that she had fired a single shot while ignoring commands to drop her firearm.

This past Friday, April 11, the New York Post reported that after sharing a positive update on Lauren’s recovery while walking his dogs, Shriner stated, “See you at Coachella!” just before entering his home.
