Weezer has seized the opportunity of their unexpected appearance at Coachella to inform their dedicated fans that the band is currently engaged in the exciting process of creating a movie.
The iconic rock band from Los Angeles, known for their unique sound and memorable hits, was recently added to the Saturday (April 12) lineup of the renowned festival’s first weekend. Their inclusion came after the unfortunate cancellations of FKA Twigs and Anitta, who had to withdraw due to ongoing visa complications and unexpected personal matters, respectively. Additionally, Ed Sheeran has been scheduled to perform at the festival as well, set to take the stage during the second weekend on Saturday afternoon (April 19).
Their performance comes shortly after an incident where bassist Scott Shriner’s wife suffered non-life-threatening injuries due to a bizarre encounter with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), culminating in a dramatic shootout. During a thrilling 12-song set that exclusively featured songs released prior to 2008, frontman Rivers Cuomo took a moment to share exciting news with the audience just before the performance of the beloved 1994 hit “Undone – The Sweater Song,” revealing that the band has been actively involved in film projects.
“We’ve been hard at work producing the Weezer movie back in Los Angeles over the last couple of weeks,” Cuomo shared with the enthusiastic crowd. “When Coachella reached out to us with the invitation for a surprise performance, we couldn’t resist! It feels amazing to connect with you all and share these heartfelt emotions.”
Fans on social media have reported that members of the Weezer fan club received updates indicating that the band would be participating in a “private filmed merchandise signing for a select few fans, in preparation for an upcoming video.” Furthermore, it was mentioned that “selected participants must sign a release form and a non-disclosure agreement before attending,” with a filming date hinted at for April 21.
In addition, fans on the platform X (formerly known as Twitter) shared a photograph of a “Notice of Filming” that had surfaced in Los Angeles regarding a scripted feature film. This project, tentatively titled Weezer: Security Threat, has identified Watch Me Unravel LLC as the production company, appropriately named after a lyric from “Undone – The Sweater Song.” The notice specified that the three-day shoot scheduled from April 7-9 would include “simulated bullet effects,” “atmospheric smoke,” and various other cinematic elements.
Although the band has not officially disclosed many details, this venture marks them as the third band from California to be the focus of an unconventional film project in recent years. Stockton’s Pavement is set to be highlighted in the genre-defying film Pavements, directed by Alex Ross Perry, while the trio from Rodeo, Green Day, is currently in the process of filming New Years Rev, a project inspired by their experiences living on tour.
