What Really Happened with Ozzy and the Bat?

The legendary story of Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off a bat is not only infamous but has also been subject to numerous distortions over the years. To shed light on this historic incident, we gathered insights from some of your favorite rock and metal musicians, alongside passionate fans, who share their recollections of this moment as they’ve heard it recounted through the years.

Musicians from I Prevail, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Armored Saint, GWAR, Hollywood Undead, Shadow of Intent, Currents, Three Days Grace, 200 Stab Wounds, and many more attempt to piece together the narrative. Additionally, fans who attended this year’s Sonic Temple festival also share their interpretations of this wild event.

The accompanying video provides a glimpse into how the tale of Ozzy and the bat has transformed and evolved over the past four decades. You’ll hear mentions of a dove (that’s an entirely separate story), monkey brains, and various other embellishments that stray far from the actual truth, largely thanks to the theatricality of GWAR.

Pepper Keenan experienced Ozzy’s performance just days after this notorious incident! Despite having received rabies shots, Ozzy appeared on stage in a wig, only to reveal his bald head beneath it, leaving Keenan in awe.

A young fan, just 17 years old, named Mark Neal, played a pivotal role in catalyzing one of the most infamous moments in metal history, which has since become a part of mainstream pop culture lore. Neal had even orchestrated this event prior to the concert, having won tickets from a local radio station.

During an appearance on David Letterman in 1982, Ozzy recounted the experience: “I get a lot of weird people at my concerts; it’s rock ’n’ roll. Somebody threw a bat onstage, and I thought it was one of those toy bats, so I picked it up and bit the thing’s head off. Suddenly, everybody is freaking out … I can assure you the rabies shots I had to undergo afterward were not enjoyable.”

Interestingly, reports from the Des Moines Register indicate that the bat was actually dead before the incident occurred.

Ozzy also humorously disclosed to the late night host that the bat had a “very salty” flavor.
