Update: January 23, 2025

Today marks an exciting milestone as the 2025 Oscar nominations have been officially announced. While there are certainly some surprising entries, none are unexpected enough to be classified as “snubs.” Although renowned figures like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman did not secure nominations for Best Actress, this outcome was largely anticipated. Similarly, while Daniel Craig was overlooked in the Best Actor category, it was evident that Sebastian Stan was a strong contender for films like The Apprentice and A Different Man. Additionally, Pamela Anderson gained traction following her Golden Globe and SAG nominations, but the final five nominees were already leading the Oscar race.

Among the categories highlighted below, the Best Supporting Actress race was filled with numerous twists and turns, yet remained predictable. As anticipated, Zoe Salda?a and Ariana Grande emerged as frontrunners, although they were the only two nominees who seemed like locks at this stage. The remaining nominees, including Isabella Rossellini, Felicity Jones, and Monica Barbaro, were all strong competitors leading up to the nominations announcement. Other notable contenders like Danielle Deadwyler, Selena Gomez, Margaret Qualley, and Jamie Lee Curtis also had a good chance, suggesting that this particular voting outcome was likely quite close.

As a horror enthusiast, one of the most delightful surprises of the day is the genre’s remarkable representation at the Academy Awards. Not only did The Substance achieve five nominations, including a Best Director nod for Coralie Fargeat, but Robert EggersNosferatu also received recognition with four nominations of its own. This acknowledgment of horror films speaks volumes about the evolving landscape of cinema and the Academy’s appreciation for diverse storytelling.

Given that the Academy largely adhered to nomination forecasts, this awards season appears to be shaping up to be exceptionally thrilling, with few clear favorites and several categories featuring closely contested races. Oscar prediction enthusiasts have much to look forward to as the excitement unfolds!
