Adrien Brody was widely regarded as a frontrunner for the prestigious Best Actor Oscar, but recent revelations about the use of AI to enhance his accent could potentially hinder his momentum. This unexpected twist raises questions about authenticity in performances, particularly when such advanced technology is involved in what is considered one of the most significant awards in the film industry.

As we approach the 97th Academy Awards, excitement is building around The Brutalist, which many critics predict will dominate the ceremony, particularly for Best Picture and Best Director for Brady Corbet. Adrien Brody’s odds of winning his second Best Actor Oscar have surged, fueled by acclaim for his compelling portrayal of Holocaust survivor and architect László Tóth. However, controversy arises as it has come to light that AI technology was employed to refine his Hungarian accent, sparking debate on the implications for his performance and Oscar candidacy.
According to Dávid Jancsó, the editor of The Brutalist and a native Hungarian, accurately capturing the nuances of the Hungarian language is notoriously challenging, even for someone with Brody’s background. Despite Brody’s Hungarian heritage, Jancsó explained the complexity involved, stating, ?It?s not that simple. It?s an extremely unique language. We coached [Brody and Felicity Jones] and they did a fabulous job but we also wanted to perfect it so that not even locals will spot any difference.? This highlights the dedication to authenticity in the film’s production process.
To ensure that Brody’s accent met the high standards required for the role, the production team explored various methods. Jancsó elaborated, ?If you?re coming from the Anglo-Saxon world certain sounds can be particularly hard to grasp. We first tried to ADR these harder elements with the actors. Then we tried to ADR them completely with other actors but that just didn?t work. So we looked for other options of how to enhance it.? He further explained that they carefully integrated his dialogue with his own voice, stating, ?Most of their Hungarian dialogue has a part of me talking in there. We were very careful about keeping their performances. It?s mainly just replacing letters here and there. You can do this in ProTools yourself, but we had so much dialogue in Hungarian that we really needed to speed up the process otherwise we?d still be in post.? This meticulous approach underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity of the actors’ performances.
While it is commendable that the The Brutalist team initially sought alternative methods to enhance Adrien Brody?s accent before resorting to AI, the decision to utilize technology?even minimally?could become a contentious issue during Oscar voting. Critics may question whether the essence of Brody’s performance is diminished by the involvement of artificial intelligence. With Oscar nominations fast approaching, Brody is expected to be a key contender for Best Actor, but will the recent revelations impact his standing as a leading candidate?
What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you think the use of AI in this context was justified, or could it ultimately undermine Adrien Brody’s chances of winning the Oscar?
