Understanding the Growth of Women’s Football
As the largest women’s tackle football league globally, the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) serves as a vital platform for talented female athletes to compete at the highest level. Cali War proudly embodies the league’s mission, showcasing excellence both on and off the field.
Over the past few decades, women’s sports have undergone a remarkable evolution, breaking down long-standing stereotypes and overcoming barriers that once seemed insurmountable. Female athletes have demonstrated that athleticism transcends gender, leading to an evolving landscape in professional sports that reflects this undeniable truth. One of the most thrilling and transformative developments has been the rise of women’s professional tackle football. Listen to the inspiring stories from some of the players on the Cali War Women’s Football team based in Los Angeles, who share their empowering journeys in pursuing professional football.
“Sports have always been a fundamental part of my life since childhood. I’ve engaged in various sports like volleyball, basketball, and track and field. However, the sport that resonates with me the most is football. Despite my lifelong struggle with weight, I’ve refused to let it define my abilities. Nonetheless, it has influenced others’ perceptions of me, leading to self-doubt, especially in the realm of sports. I’ve had to confront the stereotype of the prima donna athlete or the portrayal of women on television. I’ve come to understand that I will never fit that mold. Playing football has empowered me to embrace my true self. I play a pivotal role that is enhanced by my size, and I don’t feel pressured to conform to any smaller image. Joining Cali War has been transformative. These individuals have become my family, and I can’t envision my life without them. I eagerly look forward to football season, anticipating the camaraderie with these incredible athletes, the thrill of taking the field together, and the opportunity to achieve greatness.”

“I began my football journey in Canada and played for several years. As a child, I always dreamed of playing, yet there was no girls’ football available, and my parents were hesitant to let me play with the boys. Consequently, I participated in soccer and elite-level hockey as a goalie. A teammate from hockey introduced me to women’s football, and that’s how my journey commenced. After years in Canada, I discovered the WFA on Facebook and was impressed by the league’s size, competitiveness, and international opportunities. I met incredible women and decided to join the WFA and Cali War. Despite the challenges of traveling from Winnipeg to LA, I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. This is my third year with Cali War. We have an amazing group of women from diverse backgrounds, and we share a strong bond of love for the game and for one another. I felt nervous during my first trip down, but I was met with warmth and acceptance immediately.”
-Laura Dacey #68 Offensive Line
“I started playing tackle football five years ago in my hometown of El Paso, Texas. From a young age, I loved football, but it was never recognized as a women’s sport, making it a struggle to pursue my passion. Over the years, I played flag football to fill the void left by tackle football. Eventually, I was able to join the WFA, fulfilling my dream of becoming a professional football player. Playing football has reignited a spark in my life, bringing happiness and alleviating my worries. Football feels natural to me, and I cherish that gift, using it to help my teammates grow on the field. I travel to Los Angeles for monthly practices, demonstrating my commitment to our team’s success. Cali War is my second family! These women embraced me wholeheartedly, and I truly feel the love that surrounds us! Everyone associated with Cali War shares a singular goal: to win!”
-Jenny Nunez #98 Defensive End / Linebacker
I grew tired of the negativity often found in female sports during high school, which led me to try out for the boys’ football team. When I approached the coach, he informed my mother that we needed to discuss my participation with the principal, who cautioned her about the risks of being the only female among male players. My mother responded, ‘She plays other sports too, and she can get injured in any sport, including football. Just let her play, and she can decide for herself if this is what she truly wants.’

My first experience with women’s football was in the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL), where I played for ‘The Breakers.’ It was an enjoyable experience, surrounded by a fantastic group of women and coaches who inspired us to elevate our game. Throughout my football journey, I took time off to focus on my children. Last season, I contemplated retirement at 50, but I couldn’t part ways with the sport I love. Unfortunately, I suffered a career-ending injury during an automobile accident in February. Accepting that I could no longer play the game that I cherished was incredibly challenging, alongside stepping away from my team. However, my support for this game and my football family remains unwavering. Competing in the WFA has allowed me to travel globally while promoting the sport to female athletes around the world. Cali War is a melting pot of players from all over, not just California. The team embodies family, protection, friendship, leadership, growth, and care.
