Wonder Woman’s Future in the DCU After Gal Gadot’s Departure

James Gunn has provided an exciting update regarding the future of Wonder Woman within the DC Universe (DCU). Previously, Gunn announced that the Wonder Woman prequel series, titled Paradise Lost, is in “active development.” However, the question of who will portray the beloved princess of Themyscira following Gal Gadot’s reported departure has generated significant curiosity and speculation among fans.

James Gunn Delivers Positive News for the Future of Wonder Woman in DC Universe

Recently, James Gunn was asked about the future of Wonder Woman during a session on Threads. He hinted at an optimistic outlook for the character in the revamped DC Universe, signaling that fans have much to look forward to.

The Wonder Woman prequel series, Paradise Lost, is reportedly making progress, and when a user inquired about updates on Wonder Woman, Gunn chose to keep the details under wraps, simply stating, “Not to be shared publicly yet but yes. Encouraging.” This statement has left fans eager for more information on the Amazon warrior.

Following the significant reboot in the DC franchise, there has been rampant speculation regarding who will take on the role of the Amazons’ iconic warrior princess. With major characters such as Superman facing recasting, it appears that Gal Gadot could also be replaced. Her most recent appearance as Wonder Woman was in the 2020 film, Wonder Woman 1984.

In March 2025, Grace Caroline Currey, noted for her role in DC’s Shazam! (2019), expressed her feelings about potentially stepping into the shoes of Wonder Woman after fans had cast her in the role. She remarked, “It’s been very nice to see people say that. I think getting to be in the universe at all feels like winning the lottery. If I got to return in any capacity, that would be astonishing.”

As of now, Gunn has not disclosed any information about who will be the next actress to embody Wonder Woman. However, he did confirm last year that Paradise Lost is in “very active development” and will progress once the script has been finalized, indicating a strong commitment to the project.

Recently, WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav emphasized that Wonder Woman is among their key characters. During the Warner Bros. Discovery Q1 earnings call, he stated, “When you look at the major characters that James Gunn and Peter Safran are developing with their 10-year plan for DC, they aim to build asset value globally. Characters like Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Supergirl are seen as major asset builders and differentiators.”
