World Information Tonight Named Best by CBS

The 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards saw CNN take the lead during the evening ceremony, achieving a remarkable total of five wins in various news categories. Among these accolades, the highlight was the award for “The Full Story with Anderson Cooper”, which was recognized as the Outstanding Recorded News Program. Following closely behind were ABC, CBS, and National Geographic, each securing four awards in their respective categories.

The prestigious winners in the news categories were announced on Wednesday by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at the iconic Palladium Times Square in New York City. The evening featured Al Roker, the beloved weather anchor and co-host of the third hour of “Today”, who was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award presentation was conducted by former “Today” anchor Bryant Gumbel, adding to the evening’s significance.

Among the standout winners, ABC claimed the award for the Outstanding Live News Program with its flagship broadcast, “World News Tonight with David Muir”. The event was presented by notable figures, including Jason Bellini from Scripps, Morgan Chesky from NBC News, Katie Kingsbury of The New York Times, Leila Molana-Allen from PBS NewsHour, Rhana Natour of Al Jazeera, Abby Phillip from CNN, Deborah Roberts of ABC News, Julio Vaqueiro from Telemundo, and Bill Whitaker of CBS News.

The documentary segment of the 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards is set to take place on Thursday. This year, Disney’s National Geographic led the pack with an impressive 46 nominations, followed by PBS with 37, CNN with 33, ABC (including Hulu) with 30, Netflix with 29, and CBS with 28. Among Spanish-language networks, Univision stood out with 13 nominations.

“The talents of our journalistic and documentary communities have profoundly shaped our culture and nation,” remarked Terry O’Reilly, the chair of NATAS. “In the face of an evolving media landscape, their commitment to truth and storytelling has illuminated critical issues and empowered the public.” This statement underscores the significant role that media plays in shaping public discourse and awareness.

Adam Sharp, the president and CEO of NATAS, added: “We are proud to celebrate those who perform the courageous work of bringing truth to our nation’s screens. Their dedication sets a high standard for future generations of journalists and documentarians. We are especially pleased to acknowledge the contributions of Al Roker and our 2025 Gold & Silver Circle honorees.” The recognition of these industry leaders emphasizes the importance of integrity and excellence in broadcasting.

The Gold and Silver Circle honors professionals who have made significant contributions to television for 50 and 25 years, respectively. This year’s inductees into the Gold Circle included Marc Burstein, a senior executive producer and mentor at ABC, and Martha Teichner, a correspondent and journalist for CBS Sunday Morning. Silver Circle inductees featured Akram Abi-Hanna, a veteran cameraman and photojournalist from ABC News, Cater Lee from Spectrum News and E.W. Scripps, Bill Owens from “60 Minutes”, and Deborah Roberts, a journalist and co-anchor for “20/20”.

As part of a scheduling adjustment by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards were moved to the summer, deviating from their usual fall timeline this year. This change reflects the Academy’s efforts to adapt to the evolving media environment and the needs of the industry.

The 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards received over 2,200 submissions from the calendar year of 2024, with nominations evaluated by a panel of more than 980 individuals from across the television and streaming/digital media news and documentary community. This extensive participation showcases the competitive nature and the high standards upheld within the industry.
