SPOILERS for The Wrecking Crew. Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa teamed up in The Wrecking Crew, a buddy-cop action-comedy that premiered on Prime Video last month. The film received positive reviews, raising the question of whether a sequel is on the horizon. In an interview with THR, The Wrecking Crew director Ángel Manuel Soto discussed the potential for a follow-up.
The Wrecking Crew Sequel
The film concludes with Jonny (Momoa) receiving the name of his mother’s killer on a slip of paper, which he ultimately decides to burn. Soto believes that Jonny had already memorized the name, leaving room for revenge in a sequel.
“There are several things that seem interesting to me [for a sequel]. That’s one of them,” Soto explained. “If there’s a killer on the loose, are they really going to let it go? I think there’s a good beginning for the second one there. And the other thing that seems interesting to me is that the yakuza that they kill, Nakamura (Miyavi), he’s not the boss; he’s someone’s son. It seems to me that there’s material there for a sequel.“
What’s The Wrecking Crew About?
Set against the backdrop of Hawaii, The Wrecking Crew follows two estranged half-brothers, Jonny (Momoa) and James (Bautista), who must come together after their father’s mysterious death. As they delve into the truth, hidden secrets emerge, and loyalties are tested, revealing a conspiracy that threatens to tear their family apart. Together, they are prepared to WRECK anything that stands in their way.
The film was directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) from a screenplay by Jonathan Tropper (Star Wars: Starfighter). Alongside Bautista and Momoa, the cast includes Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, with Stephen Root and Morena Baccarin.
What’s Next for Bautista and Momoa?
Bautista is currently filming Chad Stahelski’s highly anticipated Highlander reboot in the role of Kurgan. Production on Highlander was initially set to start last fall but faced delays due to Henry Cavill’s injury during training.
Meanwhile, Momoa is set to take on a significant role as Lobo in the DCU. This is a character Momoa has long desired to portray; even his role as Aquaman in the DCEU did not deter him. Viewers can catch a glimpse of Momoa as Lobo in last month’s Supergirl teaser.
