After completing her studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, Mitchell began her career as a reporter for KYW radio in Philadelphia, where she faced the challenge of breaking into a male-dominated field. Early on, she was told that women could not be in the newsroom. “Now, I look around and see a female bureau chief, a female president of NBC News, and women at every level throughout our newsroom and the company globally. It’s incredibly validating,” she reflects on the progress made over the decades.

Throughout her career, Mitchell has been at the forefront of the advancement of female journalists, covering pivotal events since 1972, including both the Republican and Democratic presidential conventions. She has reported on the historic Gorbachev-Reagan summits, the end of the Cold War, and conducted interviews with influential figures such as Margaret Thatcher and Fidel Castro. “I mean, who gets to do that?” she asks with a laugh, reflecting on her unique experiences.

“When I think about having a front-row seat to history, it is a significant responsibility. Through our experiences—both mine and those of my colleagues—the American public is able to witness these critical historical moments. This elevates the standard for how essential it is to report the news accurately and to convey the complexities of history in a manner that is accessible to people,” she explains.

“To navigate this complex environment, journalists must remain accurate and fair, doing justice to every story while providing the necessary context. It’s crucial that we focus on facts over opinion,” Mitchell explains. “Our mission remains consistent across platforms: to deliver information and context to our audiences. Mitchell offers valuable guidance to aspiring journalists, emphasizing the importance of genuine connections. “The best political reporters are those who genuinely enjoy engaging with people. If you lack a passion for asking questions and learning about others, then you may struggle to succeed in broadcast journalism. While other formats might allow for a lack of authenticity, it’s evident when someone is not sincere in their reporting,” she advises.

While Mitchell has reported on the serious aspects of politics and history, “SNL” has adopted a satirical approach, often not holding back from making bold statements about contemporary issues.

“Beyond being one of the longest-running programs on television, let’s acknowledge the numerous ways in which ‘Saturday Night Live’ has revolutionized the television landscape,” Jones states. “It played a pivotal role in shaping American television, particularly in defining what political humor and satire look like. The visionary leadership of Lorne Michaels over the last fifty years has been instrumental in creating a show that continues to attract viewers week after week.
