Russell Crowe’s new WWII movie continues to accomplish the unthinkable as it gets closer to release by the day. Crowe has been tapped to star alongside Rami Malek and Michael Shannon in Nuremberg, the WWII courtroom drama in which a psychiatrist analyzes high-ranking German officials to see if they’re fit to stand trial for their war crimes. Nuremberg debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival a while back to a 45% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but it has since risen to 67% on the aggregate site, now that more reviews have been added.
Improving more than 20% is almost unprecedented, but it will certainly help Nuremberg’s Oscar chances. Around the time the film first premiered at TIFF, there were whispers that Sony Pictures plans to submit Crowe for Best Lead Actor for his performance in Nuremberg. News followed shortly after that the studio would also push for Malek to receive a nomination. The likelihood of the film receiving any love from the Academy has increased tenfold now that Nuremberg is closer to a Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes than it is to a Rotten one. If it can rise to 75%, it will earn the Certified Fresh label.
News also broke a few weeks ago that Sony Pictures Classics had secured distribution for Crowe’s WWII movie in India, which unlocks a massive box office market. While box office success isn’t required to receive love at the Oscars, it certainly helps a film be looked upon more favorably. A good example of this is Dwayne Johnson’s new MMA biopic, The Smashing Machine. Early reports indicated that The Smashing Machine would be a major Oscars contender, but now that it’s Johnson’s biggest flop ever, it’s possible the movie won’t receive any love from the Academy.
When Does Russell Crowe’s WW2 Movie ‘Nuremberg’ Come Out?
Russell Crowe’s Nuremberg has been set for release in theaters on November 7. The film has spent years trying to secure distribution, but thanks to the hard work and dedication of Crowe and writer/director James Vanderbilt, the film has found a home at Sony. Crowe is also attached to star alongside Henry Cavill in a Highlander reboot from Chad Stahelski, but after Cavill recently suffered an injury during training, the start of production has been pushed back to next year.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Nuremberg ahead of its November 7 release date.
