Xbox has a substantial number of franchises and popular IPs, so many that some have been overlooked. Many of the best Xbox games never received a sequel, which is unfortunate. They still develop their own fanbases and achieve cult classic status, leading to numerous requests for Xbox to revive them.
Recently, Phil Spencer revealed which of Xbox’s most underrated franchises fans wish to see revived, and the selection is quite surprising. More importantly, of the games fans selected, only one truly deserves the comeback they all desire. This game was sadly overlooked at the time despite the impressive talent behind it and has even inspired one of 2025’s best games.
Phil Spencer Revealed The Four Most Requested Xbox Franchise Revivals
There’s More JRPGs Included Than You’d Think
In an interview with IGN Japan, Phil Spencer openly discussed the dormant Xbox franchises that fans want to see return the most. Amazingly, two of them, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, were JRPGs, which rank among the most popular RPGs of all time. The other two were the cult classic Crimson Skies and the lesser-known yet impressive MechAssault.
MechAssault and Blue Dragon were the only games mentioned by Spencer that actually received a sequel, but both became inactive after their second entries. It is unfortunate that these exceptional games never managed to develop into full franchises, especially considering that both Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey had prominent names behind them. For instance, Blue Dragon featured artwork by the late Akira Toriyama, known for his work on the Dragon Ball manga and anime series as well as the Dragon Quest games.
Now that we have entered the era of Xbox remasters, there seems to be a chance that one or more of these franchises could return. Xbox has shown a commitment to supporting Japanese video game developers, so it is possible we may see the return of Blue Dragon or even Lost Odyssey. However, among all these IPs, only one should truly be brought back as it was genuinely ahead of its time.
Lost Odyssey Deserves To Be Brought Back
It Is A Classic That Has Potential Even Today
Lost Odyssey has unfortunately fallen under the radar. While Xbox 360 fans may remember this impressive JRPG gem, many will either have forgotten it or missed it upon its initial release. It achieved decent sales when it launched in 2007, but Xbox clearly did not feel it performed well enough to justify a sequel. This is regrettable, especially considering that the game is exceptionally unique and innovative within the turn-based JRPG genre.
Importantly, this is the game that inspired 2025’s GOTY contender, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as its developers acknowledged in a PlayStation blog post. This is unsurprising given its strong influences from Final Fantasy, with writing by Final Fantasy‘s creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and music from veteran composer Nobuo Uematsu. It was developed by the same studio as Blue Dragon, founded by Sakaguchi but felt like a more refined and confident title overall.
The uniqueness of Lost Odyssey, from its engrossing turn-based combat to its epic narrative and stunning visuals for its time, makes it not just a great JRPG but one of the best. If XBOX wants to compete with Square Enix and Nintendo in the JRPG realm, it must bring back Lost Odyssey.
