Xbox Offers 22 New Free Downloads Without Game Pass

If winter is good for one thing, it’s getting cozy and playing a ton of video games. Xbox knows that, which is why it’s just unleashed a snowstorm of new games for you to try, all completely free.

Starting today, the Xbox Demo Fest should appear as a tab on your console’s dashboard. Give that tab a little tickle, and you’ll find 20+ games to try out for free. The best part? You don’t need Xbox Game Pass to get involved with these freebies.

Xbox Winter Demo Fest Has Arrived

Well over 20 free games to try out

As spotted by PureXbox, the Xbox Winter Demo Fest actually went live ahead of Xbox officially promoting the event, and discovered 22 demos that can be downloaded and played now. For free. Did I mention that?

Let’s take a look at the 22 games:

  • Aikyam Demo: A Bollywood-inspired fantasy RPG with a charming visual style.
  • AWAYSIS Demo: A cute action-RPG billed as “a cutting-edge blend of reactive and emergent physics, backed up by arcade-tight controls.”
  • Biped 2 Demo: A co-op action-adventure game, “full of puzzles, friendship, support, and fun!”
  • Boxes: Lost Fragments Demo: A puzzle game that puts you in the role of a legendary thief. A real brain-tickler, this one.
  • Cash Cleaner Simulator: Piggy Bank Demo: If you’ve ever wanted to literally launder money, this is the game for you. Basically, Powerwash Simulator for aspiring criminals.
  • CASSETTE BOY Demo: A really awesome looking platformer that hides a 2D pixel world within three-dimensional space. I’m a sucker for games that play with perspective, so I’ll definitely check this one out.
  • ColorBlend FX: Desaturation Demo: A 2.5D puzzle-platformer metroidvania.
  • Contraband Police Demo: “The year is 1981, and, as a young officer trainee, you are assigned to work at a border post in the mountainous region of Karikatka. Entry into the Acarist People’s Republic is strictly regulated by the party and your every move is monitored! The situation at the border escalates when your comrade is killed during one of the interventions…”
  • Empire in Decay Demo: A roguelike deckbuilding turn-based tactical game, loosely based on chess. It’s chess with cards and extra steps, basically, which is absolutely not a bad thing.
  • Froggy Hates Snow Demo: A survival roguelike where a frog digs through freezing snow to uncover treasures and unlock upgrades. It has a lovely visual style.
  • Go North – Demo: A cozy and immersive maze adventure that promises a unique story set across expansive worlds.
  • Incantation Demo: A first-person horror-themed adventure game adapted from the live-action film of the same name. “Beyond the palpable madness and fear in the village, there’s a sinister force that drives one to despair. What happens when one crosses the forbidden line of this evil deity?”
  • Knuckle Jet Demo:Knuckle Jet is an off-the-wall, jetpunk, fast-paced, ricochet action platformer, where you use the titular Knuckle Jet to propel yourself through the air, bounce off walls and smash enemies.”
  • Kristala Demo: A dark fantasy Action RPG that looks really quite promising.
  • Limbot Demo: The “ultimate physics-based city stomping experience” that invites four players to pilot a person dressed as a giant cardboard robot! It looks like it could be a ton of fun with friends.
  • Megabattle Demo: A roguelike deckbuilder where you put together your own giant robot.
  • Pathologic 3 Demo: You have 12 days to stop a lethal plague. Presumably, there’s a hard mode that includes trying to reason with people who don’t believe in vaccines.
  • Reef Defense Demo: A “fast-paced, intense strategy game” where you have to keep your eggs safe from hungry crabs.
  • Relooted Demo: A heist sim with a brilliant twist: you’re breaking into Western museums to steal back African artifacts that were stolen in the first place.
  • Showgunners Demo: Turn-based action in a dystopian future. You play as a character forced to compete in a lethal game show. “To win, you must navigate dangerous urban arenas packed with lethal traps and face off against hordes of heavily-armed psychopaths.”
  • Worshippers of Cthulhu Demo: City-building, resource management, and strategic decision-making set in a Lovecraftian world.
  • Under Par Golf Architect Demo: “Design world-class golf courses by terraforming rough wasteland into lush fairways for smooth drives and pristine greens to ensure a true roll for every putt.”

There Are More Games To Come

You really want more?

If those 22 games aren’t quite enough for you, Xbox will be adding more demos over the next few weeks. Xbox Winter Demo Fest typically runs until the end of December, so you’ve got all Christmas to try out a bunch of great indie games and see what you might want on your radar for next year.

Until then, have a good look at the 22 Xbox games listed above and see what gets you the most excited. Personally, I’m super keen on Worshippers Of Cthulhu, but Relooted sounds like a really great concept too.
