Zak Starkey’s Actions: Pete Townshend’s Confusion Explained

Pete Townshend, a dedicated member of The Who, admits that even he is puzzled by the reasons behind the dismissal of drummer Zak Starkey from the band. This unexpected decision shook fans and the music community alike.

In April, Starkey was let go after Roger Daltrey expressed dissatisfaction with his rendition of “The Song Is Over” during a concert in London. However, shortly after, Starkey was rehired, with Townshend attributing the situation to communication issues within the band. Eventually, Starkey faced a second dismissal and was replaced by drummer Scott Devours, raising further questions about the internal dynamics of the group.

Starkey has suggested that Daltrey was the one who faltered during a live performance, stating, “I received a call from the manager, [and] who informed me that it was his unfortunate duty to let me know… that I wouldn’t be needed anymore.” Starkey recounted, “‘Roger claimed you dropped some beats.’ After watching the show, I couldn’t identify any missing beats. It seemed like Pete had to align with Roger, given their history of disputes spanning over 60 years.”

Pete Townshend Acknowledges That Things Spiraled Out of Control

In a recent interview with i Paper, Townshend concurred that Starkey’s performance was, in fact, satisfactory. He stated, “I couldn’t detect any issues. What you witness is a band that hasn’t performed together in a while. The sound quality might have played a role; I lost my sound engineer because of this.” His observations suggest that the onstage dynamics were misinterpreted due to the lack of cohesion among band members.

Townshend articulated, “I believe Roger just lost track of the situation. He struggles sometimes, and I have to tread lightly when discussing Roger because he has a quick temper. He might end up firing me next! That said, it wasn’t solely Roger’s decision to let Zak go; we aimed to collaborate on the decision, but it spiraled out of control.” The complexity of their professional relationship is apparent in these remarks.

Townshend further recalled that it was actually Daltrey who suggested bringing Starkey into the band. “I didn’t extend the invitation; that was Roger’s decision,” he clarified. “At that time, I’m unsure why he chose Zak, but Starkey embodies the spirit of Keith Moon. He brings significant advantages as well as considerable challenges to the band.”
