Not every great TV show gets the attention it deserves. Maybe it’s accessibility or timing, but some shows have to ruminate before reaching the mainstream. And by the time you find it, you’ll be mad that it took you so long to do so. One of the most underrated horror series in recent memory is MGM+’s exceptional From. Created by John Griffin, the science fiction horror thriller tells the story of a group of people who drive into a mysterious, inescapable town, and become instantly trapped. At night, they are terrorized by humanoid monsters that emerge from the surrounding forest. Residents must use special talismans to survive until morning as they search for a way out. A wide-spanning ensemble series, From is a mystery box series that earns its twists.
After a mind-blowing Season 4 finale, chances are you’re seeking another juicy horror series to fill in the void until From’s fifth season. Fortunately, we have ten titles that are destined to keep you entertained and quite afraid. From an ambitious masterpiece series that changed television forever to a recent instant classic that married horror with comedy, these series are perfect companion shows that feature similar themes and scares as From.
‘1899’ (2022)
Sometimes ambitious shows are so brilliant that in order to capture lightning in a bottle twice, the budget needs to explode. And then, when it becomes clear that the budget is nearly impossible to justify given the alleged low viewership, the high-risk, high-reward series is canceled. And yes, we’re still reeling from 1899‘s cancellation. Created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, 1899 was a mindblowing, twisted thriller that was impossible to predict. In the Netflix series, a multinational group of European immigrants travels on a steamship across the Atlantic. Their journey to a new life turns into a terrifying nightmare when they intercept distress signals from a sister ship, the Prometheus, which mysteriously disappeared months prior. As the passengers board the abandoned ship, they are thrust into a nightmarish riddle where the laws of physics and reality begin to break down. Trying to replicate the success of another series on this list, 1899 is an elaborate mystery that challenges audiences to question if what they are watching is real, a simulation, or something entirely supernatural.
A claustrophobic period thriller that builds into a twisted science fiction adventure, 1899 combines claustrophobic atmospheric tension with multilingual dread for a truly unique experience. By featuring a diverse international cast where characters initially struggle to communicate across language barriers, 1899 creates an intense atmosphere of paranoia and isolation. Like From, the locale is a fog-drenched vessel that adds instant dread and fear, as you never know what’s lurking beyond it. Through the combination, passengers are forced to battle the unknown and their own dark, hidden traumas. And it’s those traumas that plague the characters on From as well. Both shows master the mystery box format by challenging perception of reality. 1899 is a shared-trauma thriller unlike any show before it.
‘Castle Rock’ (2018–2019)
There is no other author who has mastered the art of horror quite like Stephen King. With a resume of iconic books that have been adapted for the screen, it was inevitable that at some point, his favorite fictional town would serve as the perfect vessel for a TV series. It’s exactly what Castle Rock was. The two-season Hulu supernatural horror series set in the King multiverse wove original stories with themes, characters, and iconic locations from King’s classic books into a dark, suspenseful saga centered on a single cursed town in Maine. For Season 1, the story revolves around Henry Deaver (André Holland), a death-row attorney who returns to Castle Rock after a mysterious stranger, known as “The Kid” (Bill Skarsgård), is discovered locked in an underground cage at Shawshank Prison. The second season centers around a bitter feud between two clans and features an origin story for Annie Wilkes (Lizzy Caplan), the iconic, psychotic nurse from King’s novel Misery. Castle Rock utilizes an anthology series format to tap into the mythology and lore that redefine fan service.
Castle Rock takes everything you know and love from the visionary novelist and expands it to great lengths. Even if you’re not familiar with some of the source material, the stories live on their own as standalone pieces. But if you do know the references, it becomes the gift that keeps on giving. Rather than jump scares, Castle Rock dives deep into psychological tension and dread. As you learn about each character and their repressed memories, secret pasts, or mysterious present, a Pandora’s box of character evolution is unearthed. And for some, that means the insidious nature of evil. The ensemble across the two seasons is sublime, with Caplan finding the foundation of Kathy Bates‘ Misery character while sprinkling in her own nuances that add to a perfect origin story. What both shows share is a cursed town where mysteries unfurl. The shows also share a common thread, as David Alpay, who plays Jade Herrera on From, appeared as Pastor Augustin on Castle Rock. Horror is in his DNA!
