Avex Music Group announced on Monday (April 27) its intention to invest $100 million in acquiring music copyrights, companies, and publishing catalogs within the next year.
Financed through capital from City National Bank, Avex’s first acquisition will be the publishing catalog of Infamous, a collaborator and songwriter for Teddy Swims, whose real name is Marco Rodriguez. Infamous has credits on Swims’ hit “Lose Control” and has worked with artists like Lil Wayne and Charlie Puth.
Avex aims to create a portfolio of music intellectual property to enhance its frontline business. The company has recently signed a global publishing administration deal with Bruno Mars and is the publishing entity for Kehlani co-writer Kamal Wilson, Drake co-writer Elkan, and Tate McRae co-writer Grant Boutin.
“At Avex Music Group, we are committed to investing in culturally significant music at every stage, from creation to long-term ownership,” stated Brandon Silverstein, CEO of Avex Music Group and founder of S10. “Our success in frontline publishing has generated strong global momentum, and expanding into catalog acquisition is a natural progression of that strategy. This initial $100 million signifies the first phase of a larger, long-term commitment to building a substantial global catalog business.”
Silverstein will lead acquisitions alongside Avex Music Group Chief Financial Officer Ryusuke (Ryan) Kamada and Spencer LeBoff, who heads publishing and acquisitions at Avex.
Avex Music Group is the music-focused subsidiary of Tokyo-based Avex Inc., a global entertainment company generating approximately $1 billion annually.
