There is no doubt that Superman is one of the greatest and strongest superheroes ever created. Each year, new powers are added to his already extensive catalog of abilities, which has led to him being regarded as one of the strongest fictional characters who isn’t omnipotent. Superman is the real deal, and billions of people will defend that claim.
However, this does not mean he is necessarily the strongest hero in the DC universe. While there are a few heroes stronger than Superman, they do exist. It is important to clarify a common misconception about Superman’s weaknesses: he does not have a specific weakness to magic; rather, he has the same lack of resistance to magic as any other human. This fact significantly alters the number of heroes who could be considered stronger than him.
Orion
Many may not know who Orion is, but he is an incredibly strong hero and one of the most powerful warriors among the New Gods. As the second son of Darkseid, he uses his powers for good. With the Astro Force behind him, Orion can definitely take on Superman. In fact, it has been shown that a full-fledged shot from the Astro Force can one-shot Superman. However, his powers extend beyond just the Astro Force.
In addition to the Astro Force, Orion can tap into a state called the Source of the Beast, where he becomes a more feral version of himself and amplifies his potential and strength. Being a New God comes with many perks, and Orion knows how to use them effectively. Thus, while it is a close comparison regarding strength, Orion has more opportunities to overpower Superman than vice versa.
Captain Atom (Nathaniel Christopher “Nate” Adam)
Despite not being well-known by the general public, Captain Atom—Nathaniel Christopher “Nate” Adam—is an extremely powerful superhero with unique abilities. Interestingly, Captain Atom served as one of the original inspirations for Doctor Manhattan, making him almost on par with that character. His unique power set distinguishes him from others and ensures that any battle involving him will unfold differently, likely surprising Superman.
Captain Atom possesses incredible powers of Quantum Manipulation, granting him nearly limitless power over matter’s building blocks. He also has superhuman strength, having fought Superman before and trading blows like it was a schoolyard fight. His other abilities include superhuman durability, superhuman speed (he can fly faster than light when using Quantum Energy), Energy Absorption and Manipulation (allowing him to consume various forms of energy), Elemental Transmutation (turning matter into anything he desires), and most importantly, Immortality (being composed entirely of energy). Each of these powers alone could place him close to Superman’s level, but combined they elevate him slightly higher on the tier list than the red-caped hero.
Plastic Man (Patrick “Eel” O’Brian)
While not often thought of as one of the strong DC heroes, Plastic Man is surprisingly one of the most overpowered heroes in the DC universe. In fact, he's so strong that it's almost frightening. With complete control over his body’s molecular structure, he can change his density at will and shapeshift without limits — he has even turned into a tiny capsule on Batman’s belt and shrunk down enough to extract a microscopic machine from Wonder Woman’s head. Additionally, he possesses voice mimicry, allowing him to become anyone he wishes, alongside telepathic immunity, full immortality, and regeneration.
His only known weaknesses are rapid freezing and chemicals like acetone. However, these do not prevent him from regenerating or dying. Therefore, while Superman could technically freeze him with his cold breath, it wouldn’t kill him, and he would eventually recover. It would be incredibly easy for Plastic Man to enter Superman’s body and eliminate him from within, making it almost laughable how simple it would be. Plastic Man certainly deserves more recognition in media given that he could take on Superman. Get on it, James Gunn!

Spectre (James “Jim” Corrigan)
While some may recognize Spectre as Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) from the CW DC universe, his true comic identity is James “Jim” Corrigan and he possesses far greater strength than depicted in the CW series. In DC Comics,Spectre embodies God’s vengeance, granting him limitless cosmic power and magical abilities capable of warping reality itself. Such powers provide him with nearly complete control over any battlefield.
Although Superman does not have a specific weakness to magic, he lacks resistance to it entirely. This means that Spectre’s magic makes him significantly stronger than Superman. Characters like Spectre with profound reality-warping powers are almost guaranteed to defeat Superman. While this may seem unfair, it reflects the nature of creating characters with god-like abilities. Although powerful, Superman is not a god and Spectre will likely prevail against DC’s beloved Man of Steel.
Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson)
No one wields magical power quite like Doctor Fate does. He possesses god-like magic that could easily overpower Superman in direct combat. It’s more accurate to view Doctor Fate as an entity rather than just a man wearing a helmet. He is filled with immense magical power, essentially making him a force of nature.
The depiction of Doctor Fate inBlack Adam, played byPierce Brosnan, was widely considered underwhelming by fans. With ease,Doctor Fate could trap Clark Kent in another dimension, freeze time around him or turn him into any material he chooses—he can even heal himself from mortal wounds. There is no doubt that Doctor Fate ranks among the most powerful superheroes in DC universe history and when it comes down to defeating Superman for good, there’s little competition.
Doctor Manhattan (Dr. Jonathan “Jon” Osterman)
Doctor Manhattan—Dr. Jonathan “Jon” Osterman—is widely recognized as an extraordinarily powerful superhero known for his role in Watchmen team dynamics. This all-blue hero not only surpasses Superman in strength but is also far more powerful overall. The breadth of his abilities makes it nearly impossible to list them all without writing an entire novel.
The most notable powers include mastery over atomic matter control, teleportation at will,a non-linear perception of time, duplication capabilities, and absolute invincibility. The latter alone suggests superiority over Superman due to his inability to perish but combined with an extensive array of other abilities,Doctor Manhattan could comfortably defeat Superman. Like Spectre, his god-like power level makes competition seem somewhat unfair but undeniably positions Doctor Manhattan as a top contender against any character within DC universe lore.
