George R.R. Martin is writing a new book, and it’s not The Winds of Winter.
It’s been confirmed that the author is currently working on a long-awaited spinoff book for <em>A Song of Ice and Fire</em> following an exciting new update as the world of Westeros keeps expanding. Martin has a number of books in the works that take place across various points in time in his fantasy world’s history. The most anticipated of these are The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, which are meant to end the original series. But he’s also working on spinoffs, such as the second volume of Fire & Blood.
Now, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker dropped news on Martin’s next book. Parker’s show is based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novella series, which currently consists of three entries. However, the showrunner confirmed that Martin is now working on Book 4. The showrunner revealed this while explaining his vision for the series’ future, hoping the show will run through season 5 before taking a break and coming back in a few years’ time.

Book four, which George is working on, takes place in a very cool location. And five is the last story point of Egg as a boy. So it’s a very natural ending place for us to take a break and come back when Dexter is older. So then we can do Egg the Prince, do some politics, do some fun stuff in Summer Hall and King’s Landing, and get a different vibe where they’re not on the road all the time.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 arrives in 2027, but Parker has a massive plan for the series’ scope that would require more source material from Martin. The author previously stated his intentions to write upwards of nine novellas total in the series, which would take place across various points in Dunk and Egg’s lives. Previous news about the fourth book indicated it would either be titled The She-Wolves of Winterfell, and, as such, set in Winterfell, or The Village Hero, set in the Riverlands.
The news puts yet another project on Martin’s massive plate, which already includes the long-anticipated The Winds of Winter and his promised second half to Fire & Blood‘s Targaryen history. This makes for three series in the world of Westeros that the author is currently working on. While House of the Dragon season 3 and 4 can continue pulling from his pages thanks to completed source material, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms requires more if it’s to align with his vision of the franchise onscreen.
Parker’s plan for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms would see the show return every few years following four to five seasons on the air, giving the series a real-time feel that allows for an exploration of Dunk and Egg’s life in the way Martin intends. The fourth book is a necessary guide to how that unfolds, given how important the pair become as Westeros’ history transpires. The author’s intentions appear clear and tied to the spinoff but seemingly leave the progress of his other books in limbo.
As the world of A Song of Ice and Fire continues to expand, it seems like there will be plenty of exciting developments tied to another book by Martin. Yet, when it comes to the long-term development of the franchise, it’s unclear what Martin’s release schedule is for the many books to come. Luckily, it seems Dunk and Egg’s story is being prioritized, signaling the possibility their next adventure will arrive soon and within a few years find its way to the small screen.
