Drew Starkey has made a significant statement regarding American Psycho. The actor’s “no comment” response has reignited speculation about who will portray Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation.
Drew Starkey confirms he read the American Psycho script amid casting rumors
Starkey, who collaborated with Guadagnino on Queer, has revealed that he has indeed read the American Psycho script. This revelation occurred during a GQ interview, where his attempt to evade the question quickly fell apart. When asked about the Bateman rumors, he replied, “No comment,” but added, “The script is amazing, though.”
The interviewer seized the opportunity. “Oh, so you’ve read the script?” Starkey laughed and attempted to clarify, saying, “I’ve read the script, but Luca’s my friend. I think I’ve read all of his scripts.” This response does little to quell speculation. While Starkey has not confirmed any deal, his familiarity with the screenplay places him in the casting conversation.
Moreover, reports indicate that the director is facing challenges in securing a lead actor. Austin Butler was previously rumored to be involved, but that lead seems inactive now. Patrick Schwarzenegger has publicly expressed interest in the role, stating “I’d love nothing more” in response to a fan suggestion. Other names mentioned include Jacob Elordi and Connor Storrie.
Bret Easton Ellis discussed these challenges on his podcast in February, noting that “a couple of high-profile actors” have turned down the role. He emphasized that Guadagnino’s interpretation “is completely different from Mary Harron’s 2000 movie” and will have “no resemblance” to it. Reports suggest that Guadagnino has revised the script multiple times, and Lionsgate is becoming impatient, having identified backup directors should the project face further delays.
Starkey’s remarks come at a pivotal time. Guadagnino has not directed a film since summer 2024, marking the end of an impressive five-year production streak. American Psycho remains his most notorious upcoming project. Christian Bale, who first played the role in 2000, has shown support for whoever takes on the character, stating in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop.”
