That said, one early original series from the company remains overlooked yet equally worthy of notice. By the time Truth Be Told debuted in 2019, true crime was very much on everyone’s radar. Every network was hunting for the next-ever viral murder mystery, which resulted in an abundance of detectives, suspects, and unexpected plot twists available at one’s disposal. At first glance, Nichelle Tramble Spellman’s series looked like another entry in that crowded field. It had an Oscar-winning lead, a high-profile supporting cast, and a cold case begging to be reopened.

The more interesting story, though, was the one about the woman investigating it. Her investigation is driven by guilt. Every interview, every lead, and every podcast episode forces her to reckon with the possibility that her reporting changed someone’s life forever.

It’s also what separates Truth Be Told from many of the prestige thrillers it was competing against. The show was interesting for the ripple effects it leaves behind on families, on communities, and on the journalists who package tragedy into stories for millions of strangers.

As true crime continues to grow rapidly from year to year, we have seen old conversations about the ethical responsibilities of creating true-crime books, TV shows, and films resurface. From the beginning, however, Truth Be Told has been asking difficult questions regarding responsibility for actions taken in a true-crime story, sensationalism in the presentation of a true crime story, and who ultimately has the right to dictate how a true-crime story is ultimately told once it is introduced to the public community.

Spencer is the constant across all three seasons, giving Poppy a quiet determination that keeps the series grounded even when individual mysteries become increasingly tangled. She’s never portrayed as infallible, and that’s exactly why the character works. Poppy makes mistakes, pushes people too far, and sometimes lets her own emotions cloud her judgment. Spencer embraces those contradictions instead of smoothing them over.

Around her, the supporting cast is remarkably deep. Season 1 pairs Spencer with Aaron Paul as Warren Cave, the convicted killer whose case refuses to stay buried. Lizzy Caplan pulls off the difficult task of playing twin sisters whose shared trauma sent them down radically different paths, while Elizabeth Perkins brings heartbreaking vulnerability to Warren’s mother. Ron Cephas Jones, Mekhi Phifer, Michael Beach, Tracie Thoms, and Haneefah Wood make Poppy’s family feel like more than supporting players orbiting the week’s mystery.

Rather than repeating itself, the series refreshes that ensemble each season. Kate Hudson arrives in Season 2 as wellness mogul Micah Keith, whose polished public image begins to crack under scrutiny, and Gabrielle Union joins Season 3 as school principal Eva Pierre, helping anchor the show’s most socially conscious storyline. Few streaming dramas assembled this many recognizable performers without making the casting feel like a gimmick.

Much of the criticism aimed at the first season wasn’t unfounded. It was paced rapidly, featured an excessive number of subplots, and at times struggled to balance family drama with its main mystery. Those who were anticipating a simple whodunit might find the series relatively unfocused. Although Poppy was still the central character in each season , each crime investigation offered an opportunity to explore a different area of Oakland community and to explore new questions about justice.
