The Avengers encounter a formidable supernatural team that challenges Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in both power and numbers. The Avengers set the benchmark for superhero teams in the Marvel Universe by forming a decentralized global network that transcends the limitations of a single headquarters. Their philosophy evolved as they recognized that global protection required an almost immediate response to both terrestrial and extraterrestrial threats. This led to the emergence of numerous autonomous Avengers divisions, including the West Coast Avengers and the initially independent Young Avengers.
The Avengers have directly influenced other notable teams across the Marvel Universe, which adopted similar strategies and ambitious goals. A prime example is the Fantastic Four, a traditionally close-knit family unit that expanded its original concept to create the Future Foundation, welcoming a diverse roster of young geniuses, alien refugees, and surrogate heroes. Similarly, the X-Men utilized the Avengers’ model of tactical divisions to organize their vast mutant population, establishing smaller squads like X-Force, X-Factor, and the Marauders to manage everything from proactive covert operations to global security.
The Avengers frequently combat supernatural threats alongside terrestrial and extraterrestrial foes, but they cannot confront every antagonist without a major magical powerhouse like Doctor Strange or Scarlet Witch in their ranks. Therefore, a specialized team must rise to meet these challenges.
The Midnight Sons Become The Midnight Militia
Marc Spector: Moon Knight #8; Written By Jed McKay; Art By Devmalya Pramanik & Rachelle Rosenberg
Moon Knight’s battle against the Mansion Ravenous reaches its climax after Marc Spector betrays the Midnight Sons to save Tigra and his friends. After seemingly betraying Blade, Ghost Rider, and newcomer Daredevil, Clea activates a spell that frees both the Midnight Sons and the rest of Mansion Ravenous’ victims, including an enraged Tigra. Blade understands that Moon Knight’s betrayal needed to feel authentic for Clea’s spell to work, and Clea provides everyone with magical weapons to fight back. With everyone reunited, Moon Knight assembles the “Midnight Militia” as they charge into battle.
This version of the Midnight Sons is the largest yet, partly due to change. Heroes like Tigra and 8-Ball are unsure why someone like Daredevil is present, and most of Mansion Ravenous’ victims are regular humans who gain enough power to combat the villain thanks to Clea’s energy constructs. Nonetheless, Marc Spector: Moon Knight establishes a clear beginning for a new era for the Midnight Sons, with an opportunity for the heroes inside Mansion Ravenous to become permanent members of the team.
Marvel Seems To Be Making The Midnight Sons A Permanent Staple
The Midnight Sons Are Finally Becoming An Actual Team
Despite their fame and influence on adaptations like the Midnight Suns video game, the Midnight Sons have yet to establish themselves as a consistent, long-running team like the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men. However, Marc Spector: Moon Knight appears to finally elevate this group into a true institution. The merger between the Midnight Mission and Midnight Sons leads to the formation of the Midnight Militia, who are likely to defeat Mansion Ravenous and remain united to combat future threats in the real world.
The integration of street-level heroes from the Midnight Mission alongside top-tier occult powerhouses like Clea and Ghost Rider sets up a permanent network designed to address immediate paranormal crises alongside the Avengers. Following events in Marc Spector: Moon Knight #8, the Midnight Sons may no longer be a loose alliance that disbands after one battle. Human vigilantes like Daredevil and seasoned supernatural warriors like Blade can easily commit for the long term and solidify a unified defense against the darkest corners of the Marvel Universe.
