Backrooms reactions have begun coming in for the upcoming A24 horror movie, with many praising the new film as a wholly original and unique tale filled with scares.
What are the Backrooms reactions saying?
This week, Backrooms had its world premiere, with many who were there taking to social media to begin sharing some reactions. The movie is a favorite to score a high Rotten Tomatoes score, and early reactions seem to back that ahead of its premiere on May 29, 2026.
While not official reviews, a majority of the early buzz from the review suggests it’s a good one. Nearly every reaction touches on the tension and great atmosphere Kane Parsons has delivered. Some reviews did note that the movie dragged a bit, but a larger portion praised the film, and its stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve.
Check out some reactions to Backrooms below:
The Backrooms originated as a 4chan creepypasta thread. The concept is that there are “wrong areas” of reality, also known as the Backrooms, that people can suddenly find themselves trapped in. These areas are typically portrayed as endless carpeted and monotoned rooms lit with fluorescent lights that emit a buzzing white noise effect. People can get lost in the Backrooms for long periods of time; however, there are also monsters that inhabit the liminal space.
The concept of the Backrooms quickly took off on Reddit following the initial thread. In 2022, Parsons started a series of Backrooms short films on YouTube, which then went viral and largely brought the concept into the mainstream. Severance creator Dan Erickson said that The Backrooms were one of his many inspirations when working on the Apple TV+ show.
In addition to Ejiofor, the cast of Backrooms includes Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lucite Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. The script comes from Will Soodik and Roberto Patino, while James Wan and Michael Clear are producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster.
