In 2017, Lionsgate acquired an action thriller screenplay titled Ballerina, crafted by the talented Shay Hatten. This screenplay gained recognition on The Black List, where it was celebrated as one of the top unproduced scripts of that year. The vision was to have Hatten revise the script to fit seamlessly within the John Wick franchise universe. Hatten was subsequently brought on board to co-write John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which brilliantly laid the groundwork for the concept of ballerina assassins. After Hatten completed his rewrite, the renowned director Len Wiseman was chosen to helm the project, with the incredibly talented Ana de Armas cast in the lead role. Now, Ballerina is primed for its grand debut, ready to captivate audiences worldwide.
Set against the backdrop of events occurring during John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Ballerina follows the gripping journey of Eve Macarro, portrayed by Ana de Armas, as she embarks on her rigorous training in the ancient assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma. As Eve’s narrative unfolds, she skillfully employs her exceptional marksmanship, clever tactics, and formidable hand-to-hand combat abilities to confront the nefarious sect of the assassin order responsible for shattering a significant part of her life. There are no limits to her resolve, and no amount of expertly tailored Kevlar will provide protection from her wrath. While the film’s primary focus remains on Ana de Armas’ character, it also features appearances from an array of beloved characters from the broader John Wick franchise. This includes esteemed actors such as Ian McShane as Winston, the proprietor of the Continental Hotel, the late Lance Reddick as Charon, the hotel’s dedicated concierge, and Anjelica Huston as the Director, the authoritative figure of the Ruska Roma. The cast also includes Catalina Sandino Moreno, Gabriel Byrne, Choi Soo-young, David Casteñeda, Robert Maaser, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and the iconic Norman Reedus.
