Bane Returns to Challenge Batman in New Look at Adaptation

It has been over 30 years since Bane broke the bat and made DC Comics history in the process. Coming around the same time as The Death of Superman, the moment the masked villain defeated Batman and shattered his back forever changed the course of the character on the page and has become one of the most recognizable pieces of Bruce Wayne’s lore, even to those who have never read the Knightfall storyline it came from. Christopher Nolan made it an iconic part of his superhero trilogy capper, The Dark Knight Rises, while everything from Robot Chicken to Rick and Morty has parodied the exact scene where Bane delivers the signature blow. Yet, only now is the saga where it originated from getting a proper adaptation for the screen.

Next month, Warner Bros. Animation, DC, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will debut Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, the first piece in a trilogy of films based on the landmark comic book event. Starring Star Trek: Strange New Worlds lead Anson Mount as Bruce Wayne and the MCU’s Scorpion, Michael Mando, as Bane, the film will recreate the moment the brute frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from the confines of Arkham Asylum and back onto the streets of Gotham City. With so many threats out and about, the Caped Crusader will be pushed to his breaking point both figuratively and quite literally when he comes face-to-face with the masked and muscular monster. Collider can exclusively share a new sneak peek of the moment Bruce encounters Bane for the first time and begins a fight he’s wholly unprepared for.

Our footage begins in Wayne Manor on a dark and stormy night, when Bruce finds both Tim Drake and Alfred unconscious on the floor. It’s not long before the perpetrator reveals himself to be Bane, who tracked him down, much to the Bat’s surprise. He gives a brief evil monologue, calling Batman a crutch and the “weakness that drowns this city” before the two prepare to fight. Although he’s the so-called world’s greatest detective, Bruce clearly didn’t see his enemy’s transformation into a hulking mass of muscle through the power of venom coming. Things do not go well for The Dark Knight as, despite his size, Bane still proves agile enough to catch him with one devastating hit after another while shrugging off any meager blow Batman can lay on him. Completely outmatched, the hero makes a hasty retreat with a few smoke bombs, but the masked menace knows where he went, and he has every intention of breaking him.
