Best Album from 25 Notable Grunge and Post-Grunge Bands

To illustrate the evolution of grunge over time, here are the best albums from 25 prominent grunge and post-grunge bands.

The origins of grunge trace back to the early 1980s when a collection of bands in the Pacific Northwest began merging rock, punk, and metal into a unique sound. One notable group, Green River, released what is regarded as the first grunge EP, Come on Down, in 1985.

Early contenders included Melvins, The U-Men, Soundgarden, Skin Yard, Malfunkshun, and Screaming Trees. Green River later divided into Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone, the latter also featuring members of Malfunkshun after their breakup.

As the decade progressed, Nirvana and Alice In Chains emerged. The formation of Pearl Jam followed the death of Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone.

By the mid-1990s, many of these bands became central to the rock ‘n’ roll scene. Every label sought to replicate Nirvana’s success with Nevermind, leading to grunge’s expansion beyond the Pacific Northwest. Flannel shirts and combat boots even made their way onto fashion runways.

Grunge reached its peak popularity, inspiring a new wave of bands that simplified and polished its sound. These became the radio stars of the late ’90s and early 2000s — known as post-grunge bands.
