Explore Our Comprehensive Ranking of Every Black Sabbath Album from No. 19 to No. 1

Globally recognized as the pioneering force behind heavy metal, Black Sabbath’s impact on music and culture is both profound and enduring. Their influence transcends generations, establishing a legacy that is truly immortal.

The genesis of metal music itself might not have occurred without a fateful incident at a metal factory. On the final day of his job, guitarist Tony Iommi faced a life-altering accident that resulted in him losing the tips of his fingers. Initially wanting to leave work early, Tony’s mother urged him to complete his shift, which led to a tragic yet transformative event.

?I went to the hospital and they cut the bones off [the end of the affected fingers], and they said, ?You might as well forget playing,?? Iommi recounted in a 2017 interview with Musicians Institute. This pivotal moment could have ended his musical aspirations, but instead, it sparked a revolution.

With custom plastic tips attached to his fretting hand, Iommi innovatively down-tuned his guitar, allowing him to play despite his injury. This adaptation not only facilitated his ability to perform but also marked the birth of a new genre?heavy metal as we know it.

The discography of Black Sabbath is extensive, featuring 19 albums that span decades and showcase a variety of musical styles. Throughout this journey, more than 30 musicians have collaborated with the band, serving as live session members, while Tony Iommi has remained the unwavering constant throughout their evolution.

Although the eras featuring Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio are the most celebrated by fans, the Black Sabbath catalog is rich with hidden gems and notable moments that deserve recognition and appreciation.
