Blumhouse Atomic Monster Reveal New Name for Merged Companies

What the Blumhouse Atomic merger means

  • New name: The merged companies are now known as Blumhouse Atomic, while Blumhouse and Atomic Monster continue as separate production labels.
  • Creative teams: Each label retains its own creative team to guide film and television projects.
  • Ownership structure: The merger was reported to have three owners: Jason Blum, James Wan and Comcast, with Blum as the majority owner.
  • Horror projects: The partnership brings together companies associated with franchises including The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw.

UPDATE: Deadline reports that the merged companies, Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, will now be known as Blumhouse Atomic. The companies will “continue as distinct production labels with their own creative teams shepherding film and TV projects under each label.”

Blumhouse founder Jason Blum provided the following statement: “When we merged our companies, we believed the whole would be greater than the sum of its parts, and that is exactly what has happened. Blumhouse Atomic is a natural evolution of what we’ve built together. The Conjuring franchise, Insidious, Saw, no filmmaker has created more horror franchises than James Wan, and together we’ve brought some of the genre’s most recognizable properties under one roof. Bringing Saw back to James, with a new chapter on the way, is a perfect example of what we can do together. We have the output of a studio with the creative freedom and financial discipline of an independent company, and more opportunities than ever to take these stories beyond the theater and into television, games and live experiences.”

Atomic Monster founder James Wan added, “The future of horror comes from new voices, and Blumhouse Atomic gives us more ways to find them and support them for the long haul. I got my start with a small film and people willing to take a chance on it, so creating those opportunities for others is personal to me. Working with filmmakers like Kane Parsons, Curry Barker, Josh Giuliano and Dylan Clark is a big part of that. We want to give them the freedom to make something distinctive and build relationships that last beyond one film.“

The original article, from January 2024, follows:

Nearly fourteen months had passed since Jason Blum and James Wan, collaborators on the M3GAN and Insidious franchises, announced plans to merge Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster. The Hollywood Reporter then confirmed that the merger had closed, and Blum marked the deal with an X post saying, “Our deal is …. Done. Blumhouse and Atomic Monster have officially joined forces. The preeminent homes for horror are now under one roof!“

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Blumhouse and Atomic Monster will work as separate labels and retain creative independence, with a three-way ownership structure split by Blum, the majority owner; Wan; and Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal.“ The reported arrangement combined shared ownership with separate production labels.

When the merger was first announced, Blum said the partnership could work because “James is probably 70 to 80 percent artist and 30 to 20 percent business person, and I am the reverse.” Wan added, “We really do complement each other, yin and yang, which is part of what makes this so exciting.” Blum also said he hoped the deal would increase Blumhouse’s theatrical output: “We don’t usually put out more than three or four theatricals a year, and my hope is that with James we could double that to six to eight theatricals.” The figures were Blum’s stated goal, not a confirmed release schedule.

At the time, the companies’ next collaboration was Night Swim, a Blumhouse and Atomic Monster production set for a theatrical release from Universal on January 5th. Written and directed by Bryce McGuire, the film follows Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness. Ray moves into a new home with his wife Eve, teenage daughter Izzy and young son Elliot, hoping to return to professional baseball and use the backyard pool for physical therapy. The home’s dark past unleashes a malevolent force that threatens the family.

Night Swim stars Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Amélie Hoeferle (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and Gavin Warren (Fear the Walking Dead).

How is the merger owned, and what output did Jason Blum hope for?

The reported ownership structure includes Jason Blum, James Wan and Comcast, with Blum as the majority owner. Blum said he hoped the partnership could raise annual theatrical output from the usual three or four films to six to eight.

The reported merger structure gives Blum, Wan and Comcast ownership interests, while Blum’s six-to-eight-film figure was a goal rather than a confirmed schedule.

  • Owners: Jason Blum, James Wan and Comcast.
  • Majority owner: Jason Blum.
  • Output ambition: Blum said he hoped annual theatrical releases could rise from three or four to six to eight.

The distinction matters: the ownership arrangement was reported as part of the deal, while the higher release count was described by Blum as an aspiration.

What horror franchises and filmmakers are connected to the partnership?

The companies are associated with horror franchises including The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw. James Wan also named filmmakers Kane Parsons, Curry Barker, Josh Giuliano and Dylan Clark as people the company wanted to support.

Blumhouse Atomic brings together horror properties and production teams while expressing an interest in developing new filmmaking voices.

Blum said a new Saw chapter returning to James Wan was an example of what the partnership could accomplish. Wan described supporting filmmakers beyond a single film as part of the company’s approach.

What was Night Swim about?

Night Swim is a supernatural horror film about a family whose new backyard swimming pool becomes connected to a malevolent force. The story follows former baseball player Ray Waller and his family after they move into a home with a dark past.

Night Swim connects a family’s hope for recovery and a fresh start with the threat concealed in their home’s history.

  • Director and writer: Bryce McGuire.
  • Family: Ray, his wife Eve, teenage daughter Izzy and young son Elliot.
  • Central threat: A malevolent force linked to the home’s past.
  • Cast: Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle and Gavin Warren.

The film’s premise places the swimming pool at the center of both Ray’s hoped-for physical therapy and the family’s encounter with the supernatural threat.
