‘Brave New World’ Falls Short Against 17 MCU Films at Box Office

After an impressive eight weekends in theaters, the momentum at the box office for Captain America: Brave New World is finally showing signs of slowing down. Anthony Mackie makes his highly anticipated big-screen debut as the iconic Star-Spangled Man, and the film has managed to amass a significant total of $199 million at the domestic box office, alongside $213 million from international audiences, culminating in a remarkable worldwide total of $412 million. While this achievement positions Brave New World as one of the top three highest-grossing movies of the year globally and claims the title of the #1 movie domestically, it unfortunately pales in comparison to the overall performance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The earnings of Brave New World are less than half of the box office totals seen by 17 other MCU films, making it the sixth-lowest-grossing movie in the MCU franchise to date, having surpassed only The Marvels, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger, Black Widow, and Eternals.

Several films have exceeded Captain America: Brave New World’s total earnings by more than double, beginning with the obvious blockbuster hits that have crossed the $2 billion mark, such as Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War. However, even the less prominent titles like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thor: Ragnarok have achieved grosses of $845 million and $850 million, respectively, both more than doubling the revenue of the fourth Captain America installment. The MCU boasts nine additional films that have surpassed the impressive $1 billion threshold, including fan favorites like Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 3, Black Panther, Deadpool & Wolverine, Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Avengers, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. With a production budget estimated at around $180 million, industry experts believe that Brave New World has likely reached its break-even point for recovering production costs; however, the additional expenses related to marketing the film are expected to hinder its ability to turn a profit for Marvel Studios.
