This year celebrates three whole decades of Pokémon, and what better way to commemorate this milestone than by immersing yourself in even more of your favorite ‘mons. Recently, fans have been treated to exciting redesigns for characters like Meowth, along with an incredible collaboration between Adidas and The Pokémon Company.
Additionally, we can anticipate the launch of Pokémon’s Generation 10 with the release of Pokémon Winds and Waves sometime next year, which will transport fans to a tropical archipelago region featuring multiple underwater areas. While we don’t have all the details yet, we do know the Starters we can expect, and it seems that the beginning of Gen 10 will be more expansive and exciting than ever before.
However, that’s not all. Last month marked the launch of a brand-new Pokémon collaboration with Los Angeles-based creative director and designer Sean Wotherspoon. Released on July 23, a fresh batch of Pokémon plushies has hit the market, showcasing stunning representations of Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Charizard.
Now available for purchase at Pokémon Center Online in Japan, these plushies are a unique twist on traditional designs. Each plush features a patchwork quilt-like pattern sewn onto their bodies. Notably, Bulbasaur’s flower has been redesigned, along with Charizard’s wings and Pikachu’s belly and ears. The results are truly special, and even as a casual Pokémon fan, I find myself tempted to buy them.
This design is characteristic of Wotherspoon, who is renowned for founding the vintage store Round Two. His work is often recognized for its 80s and 90s-inspired prints. After previously focusing on streetwear and footwear, it appears that this talented designer has now turned his creative energy toward the world of Pokémon.
As these are not merely toys but collector’s items, they come with relatively high price tags. The Bulbasaur plush is priced at 7,700 yen, while Charizard and Pikachu are similarly priced. This amounts to approximately $50. While this isn’t exorbitant, it is certainly more than your average plushie. However, given Wotherspoon’s expertise, I was expecting a much higher price point, making this a pleasant surprise.
These plushies make for an ideal addition to the celebrations for the Pokémon franchise’s 30th anniversary and would serve as perfect gifts for Nintendo enthusiasts in your life.
