Due to her father’s history of alcoholism, Charlize recognized that he was likely at his brother’s house drinking. They visited the home and discovered the men “pretty loaded.”
However, Charlize needed to use the bathroom, so she hurried inside without greeting anyone, which her father interpreted as disrespectful.
“In South Africa, there is a significant emphasis on respect for elders,” the Atomic Blonde actress noted. “He was in a state where he just spiraled. He questioned: ‘Why didn’t you stop? Who do you think you are?’”
Afterward, both Charlize and her mother felt “something was different.” Their intuition was confirmed when Charles returned home later that evening with his brother.
“I could sense the level of anger, frustration, or unhappiness by the way he drove in,” said Charlize, who had been pretending to be asleep in her bedroom. “To get to the point: He finally broke into the house. He shot through the steel doors to get in, making it very clear that he intended to kill us.”
