Chucky Movie Update: New Director and Continuity Details Revealed

This week, Chucky creator Don Mancini revealed that a new movie is in development, and now, we know who will be directing the film, along with additional details.

Who is directing the new Chucky movie?

According to a recent report from Bloody Disgusting, Mancini will not only be writing the new Chucky movie but also directing it. This marks Mancini’s first time directing a full-length film featuring the character since 2017’s Cult of Chucky. The current plan is to maintain continuity with the previous films and the three-season Chucky television series that aired from 2021 to 2024.

This decision ensures Mancini’s continued involvement in the franchise for the foreseeable future. Although he only wrote the first four Chucky films, Mancini is recognized among horror enthusiasts for his significant contributions to the franchise, with the only project he did not participate in being the 2019 Child’s Play remake.

To date, there have been eight films within the Child’s Play franchise; however, the latest film, 2019’s Child’s Play, acted more as a potential reboot and did not include Mancini’s involvement. Bloody Disgusting’s earlier report also indicates that the goal for the new movie is to make it “scary” while harkening back to some of the earlier films that balanced horror with Chucky’s playful and humorous persona as a horror icon.

The most recent Chucky film that Mancini wrote and directed was 2017’s Cult of Chucky, which was released direct-to-video and featured Fiona Dourif, Michael Therriault, Adam Hurtig, Alex Vincent, Jennifer Tilly, and Brad Dourif. The Chucky television series, which ran for three seasons before its cancellation in 2024, served as a sequel to that film.

Currently, it remains unclear whether the upcoming Chucky movie will incorporate elements from the TV show’s storyline; however, it is likely to include many familiar characters from the Chucky films, as Mancini frequently collaborates with the same cast across multiple projects.
