Color Rules Redefined

Key Takeaways

  • Color Pairing: Experimenting with unexpected color combinations can create exciting outfits.
  • Texture Matters: Mixing textures like satin and wool adds depth to contrasting tones.
  • Third Color: Introducing a third color can enhance the overall look significantly.
  • Fall Fashion: Rich fabrics and deeper shades provide more opportunities for creative combinations.

One of my favorite compliments to receive is, “I love how you pair colors,” because experimenting with unexpected combinations is one of the things I enjoy most about getting dressed. I love seeing what happens when you put two shades together that might not seem like an obvious match. Fuchsia with turquoise, violet with burgundy, or a flash of emerald against orange. Sometimes the combinations that surprise me most end up being the ones I’m most excited to recreate.

My biggest tip is to forget the traditional rules of what goes together. Start with a color you love, then introduce one that feels a little unexpected. Contrasting tones become even more interesting with texture in the mix, like satin against wool, velvet with silk, or a printed accessory that pulls several shades together. And don’t stop at two. A third color is often the very thing that brings the whole look to life. In fall, with richer fabrics and deeper shades in play, I want to experiment even more. After all, the fun is in discovering combinations you wouldn’t have thought to try.
