A new subclass in Dungeons and Dragons aims to address the shortcomings of its predecessor, and early feedback is highly encouraging. Several new books are scheduled for release in 2026 for D&D. In June, players can look forward to Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, a sourcebook detailing the Domains of Dread and introducing various horror-themed options. In September, two Arcana Unleashed books will explore the foundational aspects of magic in the TTRPG.
Recent playtests have revealed some reworked subclasses for the upcoming books, with one particularly standing out. This subclass was featured twice in the Arcane Subclasses playtests on D&D Beyond’s Unearthed Arcana. Based on what was showcased in 2025, this new character option is expected to debut alongside the Arcana Unleashed books, marking a significant comeback after being deemed one of the least favorable subclasses in its 2014 iteration.
Similar to the return of the College of Spirits Bard in D&D’s upcoming Ravenloft: The Horrors Within book, the Arcane Archer subclass for Fighters is anticipated to make its comeback in a revamped form with the Arcana Unleashed expansion. Recent playtests indicate that it has resolved all previous issues that rendered it ineffective. For instance, previously, Arcane Archer was limited to archers using bows. The updated writing now accommodates any type of ranged weapon.
This means an Arcane Archer could utilize a crossbow or firearm. Additionally, this updated subclass for Fighters can now use their primary feature, Arcane Shot, more frequently than before. Previously limited to two uses per Rest, they can now utilize it a number of times equal to their Intelligence modifier, plus regain one use with every Initiative Roll. The new feat, Magical Ammunition, allows Arcane Archers to be effective outside of combat as well, offering various ammunition effects.
The previous version of Arcane Archer Fighters in D&D was perceived as significantly underpowered and overly nerfed, especially given their complex builds that required investment in a third main stat (Intelligence). They felt more like diminished Rangers than true long-range Fighters. However, with the updates observed in the playtests, they are starting to resemble ranged Battle Masters more closely.
It remains uncertain whether Wizards of the Coast will incorporate the changes seen in the playtests into the final version of the 2024 Arcane Archer. Nonetheless, this indicates that the company is actively responding to player feedback and striving to enhance player experience. Overall, Arcane Archers may finally become genuinely viable options in Dungeons and Dragons, prompting me to consider trying them once they are released.
