Weeks after swirling rumors suggested that the groundbreaking Californian experimental hip-hop trio, Death Grips, had disbanded, the band has taken to social media to unequivocally refute these claims and assure their dedicated fans of their ongoing presence in the music scene.
Reports concerning the alleged breakup of the band initially surfaced in early February. This speculation was fueled by a supposedly leaked message from producer Andy Morin, who cryptically stated, “yeah it’s over,” before directing blame toward vocalist MC Ride, whose real name is Stefan Burnett. This revelation led to widespread concern among fans regarding the future of the band.
The leaked message further revealed, “Stefan doesn’t want to do any more,” indicating potential issues within the band. “But truthfully none of us can ever predict what will happen with the group,” it added, reflecting the uncertainty that often surrounds such creative collaborations. At that time, no official communication had been issued by the notoriously private band, leaving fans in a state of speculation.
However, on Tuesday, April 8, the group made a surprising return to their semi-active Instagram account. They shared their first post since October 2023, reassuring fans that Death Grips is still very much alive and continuing their musical journey.
“Despite rumor and hearsay, we remain active as Death Grips,” stated a message signed by Burnett and drummer Zach Hill. The post featured text written in marker on a framed artwork, which visually communicated their commitment. Notably, Morin’s absence from the signature raised eyebrows, possibly hinting at a future direction for the band as a duo, which has intrigued fans and critics alike.
Death Grips was formed in 2010 in Sacramento, California, and consists of Burnett, Hill, and Morin. They burst onto the scene with their debut EP, Exmilitary, released in April 2011. Their unique sound and innovative style quickly garnered them greater recognition, especially with their debut album, The Money Store, which arrived in 2012. This album received critical acclaim and achieved remarkable chart positions, including a spot in the top 20 of the Heatseeker Albums and Rap Albums charts, as well as a No. 130 ranking on the Billboard 200.
After releasing several other albums, Death Grips shocked fans in July 2014 when they announced their alleged split, claiming, “We are now at our best and so Death Grips is over.” This announcement came alongside their withdrawal from a highly anticipated tour supporting Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden, leaving many to speculate about their future.
Despite the apparent breakup, the band released the second half of their album, The Powers That B, in 2015. Shortly thereafter, Death Grips returned to the stage, surprising fans with their resilience. Since then, they have continued to release new albums and EPs, although they have not performed live since their appearance at the 2023 Austin City Limits festival, raising questions about their touring plans and future performances.
