Dot Cake Explained: Discover the Viral Dessert Trend

Now, the latest viral dessert has made its debut.

It is fittingly called the “dot cake.” On TikTok, you can find numerous videos of influencers gliding their spoons across the sprinkle-covered surface before indulging in the fluffy cake served in a cup.

“I cannot scroll through my phone without coming across a video of a dot cake,” baker Alex Posner, who co-founded the bakery behind this sugary phenomenon—The Dot Cakes—on Long Island, New York, alongside her mother Sondra Posner—recently shared with Good Morning America, “which feels incredibly surreal.”

After all, Alex never anticipated that these treats would gain such immense popularity when she began making them as a high school senior in 2017.

“This started as just a friends-of-friends thing,” she explained on the Invisible Ink podcast in 2024. “People enjoyed their taste, and they were adorable. It was essentially this whole packaged deal.”

However, during her sophomore year of college, Alex’s customer base grew significantly, leading to her “aha moment” when she realized she could turn this concept into a business.

“I would have clients arriving at my house and at the store who I had no idea were coming,” the University of Texas at Austin alum continued. “I thought, ‘This has reached people I didn’t even know existed, and I didn’t even know was possible.’
