There’s no arguing with the fact that Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball more generally, is one of the most iconic anime series, and even media franchises in history, with millions of fans across the world who still tune in for every new release. On TV, they have been very well serviced, with nine distinct seasons spanning 291 episodes across its original run from 1990-1996.
There are also a bunch of spin-offs and side projects for viewers to consume, creating a tapestry that is pretty unrivaled in the genre overall. That said, there has been a lot less luck in the game department, and for every great release, there have been two or three that really fail to hit the mark.
Now, a new product is on the way, and fans think it could have all the ingredients needed to really be one of the best official games of all time.
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post confirming that a new board game from Lynnvander Studios has been fully funded on Kickstarter (and then some). Dragon Ball Z: The Board Game Saga looks absolutely epic in scale, with a ton of iconic characters, and a complex setup that should really appeal to the tacticians out there looking for a new game to play.
The studio has a very solid track record of original releases, and in sharing this next project with fans, they detailed exactly what it’s going to be like when it’s finished:
“For Dragon Ball Z fans, this game is the closest you’ve ever come to playing through the anime itself. Created by lifelong fans, this cooperative campaign comes in at 15+ hours of gameplay, and is designed to capture the feeling of the series, from intense battles and desperate training to legendary transformations and unforgettable villains.
“The game plays out across 12 unique “Episodes,” carefully structured game sessions, each featuring new villains, fighter abilities, locations, allies, and items. Experience the Dragon Ball Z saga one episode at a time as you grow stronger, unlock new powers, and relive iconic moments from the show.”
As you might expect, fans are very excited about the potential of the project, which blew past its original crowdfunding target of £6,694.
“I’ve been waiting for this game for almost a decade and there’s a chance it never makes it to retail. I ain’t taking that chance. Took that risk with Carnival Zombie and had to wait a similar amount of time for them to kickstart a 2nd edition,” one comment read.
While another added, “I think this is literally the game I pre-ordered years ago before the company publishing it went under. Literally pre-ordered two copies for my brother and I and was p***ed it never shipped. If so, I am beyond excited they are actually bringing it to market.”
“I was SO psyched for this back in the day, I’m determined to play (and win) as Tien or Yamcha LOL,” a third said.
Happily for a Kickstarter project, the timeline provided for Dragon Ball Z: The Board Game Saga is actually relatively short, with production expected to conclude by October, with backers getting their products in December or January 2027 (depending on location). There’s still time to back if you like the look of the game, with the funding project closing down on July 7.
