Following the conclusion of Stranger Things, one of its lead stars has just joined the cast of Magic: The Gathering director Matt Johnson’s next movie about drug mules.
What do we know about the Stranger Things star’s new drug mule movie?
Finn Wolfhard, known for playing Mike Wheeler in Stranger Things, has joined the untitled film based on a true story about a former Vice Media editor who used the company’s Canadian headquarters to recruit young journalists into a drug-smuggling ring. THR reports that Wolfhard will play the Canadian investigative journalist who broke the original story, published in the National Post.
According to the report, Yaroslav Pastukhov, a former Vice Canada music editor, allegedly tried to recruit other Vice journalists as international drug mules, offering each of them $10,000 for the job. Pastukhov was arrested by the RCMP in 2019, leading to a nine-year prison sentence, and granted six months of day parole in 2022.
Johnson is known for directing Blackberry, the upcoming Tony movie featuring Dominic Sessa, and an adaptation of Magic: The Gathering, which was announced last year. Johnson also created and directed both Nirvana the Band the Show, and its movie.
Department M is executive producing the film. Matthew Miller and Matt Greyson will be producing for Zapruder Films, in association with Rhombus Media, with Telefilm Canada helping finance the feature. The film will be released in U.S. theaters by Neon.
Besides Stranger Things, Wolfhard recently appeared in the Malcolm in the Middle revival, and hasn’t ruled out returning for an It project. Wolfhard has appeared in Andy Muschietti’s It and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The actor’s directorial debut, Hello of a Summer, was also released by Neon in 2023.
The upcoming movie from Matt Johnson currently doesn’t have a release date. Johnson’s Anthony Bourdain biopic, Tony, releases in August 2026.
