COLLIDER: In a compelling flashback, we witness Nina’s young self meeting Saxton, which seems to foreshadow the tragic fate of her father, culminating in his confrontation with Saxton. This moment is contrasted with their present-day encounter, where she reveals her true identity and the truth about his past actions. It’s intriguing to see Keith David play a younger version of himself. What motivated you to depict this specific moment in the backstory of Saxton and Nina?

LATOYA MORGAN: It was an absolute priority for me. I insisted, “We must include this Philadelphia origin story for Nina, regardless of what else we have to cut!” Thankfully, we didn’t have to cut much! [Laughs] This moment was crucial in demonstrating that young Saxton was always a man who got things done by any means necessary, and it shows the repercussions of those actions. This pivotal moment shapes Nina’s character and sets the stage for their inevitable confrontation. It was important to illustrate how this moment forged Nina into who she is today. From the initial moment when her father hands her the locket, which she cherishes, to being held hostage by the very man responsible for her father’s death, it was essential to connect these dots for the audience.

In this episode, not only do we witness the kidnapping, but also the brutal torture, including waterboarding. How crucial was it to highlight that Saxton and his crew might not intend to kill Nina immediately, yet it becomes evident that she is enduring unimaginable suffering during this episode?

MORGAN: This moment for Nina is a scenario she could never have anticipated during her training at Quantico. She never expected to plunge so deeply into danger so quickly, nor did she foresee that she would be fighting for her life in such dire circumstances. The audience gets a glimpse of her incredible ingenuity as she attempts to navigate this perilous situation, utilizing her skills as a negotiator and her intelligence as a seasoned agent to strategize her escape. Simultaneously, she stands firm in her convictions, defending herself and honoring her father, all while boldly confronting Saxton. I find this dynamic incredibly compelling! It creates a powerful moment where both characters confront each other, finally laying their truths bare, with Saxton admitting his role in her father’s death without remorse. This encounter is not only pivotal for the plot but serves as a deeply emotional scene that resonates with the audience.

The challenges for Nina don’t end there; she is abandoned in the desert, where Grant is dispatched to confront her. Handcuffed and desperate to escape, it ultimately falls to Awan to come to her aid, which beautifully encapsulates the evolution of their partnership throughout this season. Was it always your intention for Awan to deliver the final blow, rather than Nina saving herself?

MORGAN: They actually team up to take him down together. We really put Nina through the wringer in this episode. This woman is facing unimaginable challenges, outgunned and outmatched, yet she fights with every ounce of strength she possesses. Even though her opponent is physically superior and armed, she continues to struggle for her survival. Just as she is on the brink of defeat, Awan arrives to turn the tide. This moment was pivotal for Awan’s character arc, too. From the very beginning, he has been somewhat of an outsider, hesitant to take action in the field. However, through his partnership with Nina, he has learned to embrace his capabilities as an agent. In this critical moment, he demonstrates that growth by taking decisive action to save her, showcasing how they have evolved as individuals and as partners throughout the season.

“This was part of a comprehensive narrative strategy…”

In light of the terrible acts Saxton admits to, it’s difficult not to feel a sense of sorrow when he ultimately sacrifices himself for Royce. Despite his numerous heinous actions, he remains a father at heart. I’m curious about the decision to eliminate Saxton — can we confirm whether he is truly dead?

MORGAN: This was an incredibly tough decision to make. I have immense admiration for Keith and his exceptional talent, but from the outset, this was our plan. We discussed this trajectory with him even before casting, as it was a component of a broader narrative strategy that we envisioned spanning multiple seasons. It was always in the cards, and even then, I found myself questioning, “Are we sure we want to do this?” given how remarkable he is. However, if we were to proceed with it, it was essential to me that it be done in a way that felt significant and aligned with his character’s journey. From the very start, we established that this character had sent Jim to secure a heart for his son. Thus, it was only fitting that he would perish while protecting his family. Losing such a compelling character is undeniably tragic, but I hope it resonates with the audience as an emotionally charged moment — one that provides depth and meaning for all involved, including Royce, Jim, and Nina. Even Nina experiences a moment of sorrow, recognizing the complexity of their relationship. My goal was to create an emotional peak that lingers with the audience.

How early did you and J.J. [Abrams] determine the shocking twist that Jim’s brother Joey is alive — and that he is, in fact, the enigmatic figure known as Xavier, who has haunted the storyline throughout the season?

MORGAN: We conceptualized this twist early on, within the first six weeks of our discussions. As we outlined the story for multiple seasons, the timing of this revelation was a focal point; it was always part of our overarching narrative. This engaging story unfolds in layers, prompting viewers to think they have it figured out, only to be surprised by new twists. I am eager to see where this leads us, as it opens an incredible opportunity for a potential new season, leaving the audience wondering, “What other mysteries remain in this narrative?” I hope viewers have enjoyed the journey thus far and look forward to what’s next.

Izzy’s Heartbreaking Reveal in the Finale Was Initially Planned for an Earlier Episode in ‘Duster’

At this juncture, both Jim and Nina are poised to leave, each with their own priorities. However, Jim’s journey is complicated further by Izzy’s revelation of her cancer diagnosis. As you crafted Jim’s character arc, how does this revelation influence his decision to stay? Additionally, with Luna’s well-being at stake, how does this affect his responsibilities?

MORGAN: Absolutely. This plot twist was part of our plan from the very start. Initially, we considered revealing it in the pilot, but we ultimately decided that it needed to resonate more profoundly at the end of the season. The narrative builds a sense of urgency around Izzy’s battle, which serves not only her personal struggles but also hints at larger stakes in Jim’s life — especially concerning Luna’s well-being. The audience perceives that Izzy is fighting for her life, but they also realize that her struggles are intertwined with Jim’s responsibilities as both a partner and a father figure. I believe audiences will find the dynamic between Camille and Josh incredibly compelling, as their chemistry throughout the season enhances these poignant moments. For me, their performances evoke a deep emotional response, tugging at my heartstrings with every scene. Their ability to convey vulnerability and strength simultaneously is truly remarkable.
