F1 Dominates the Competition on the Track

The highly anticipated F1 film is making a significant impact at the box office, projected to bring in approximately million over the weekend, an impressive figure that exceeds our earlier forecasts by about $5 million. This surge in ticket sales is largely attributed to fantastic word-of-mouth reviews and a stellar A CinemaScore rating that highlights its appeal among viewers. Globally, the excitement surrounding Formula One racing transcends North America, with the film expected to rake in around $85 million from international markets. This culminates in a remarkable total of $140 million for the weekend, establishing a new box office record for the acclaimed actor Brad Pitt. Although his previous film, World War Z, achieved higher domestic earnings, this success gives Apple Original Films a much-needed boost in the competitive film landscape. The overwhelming message encouraging audiences to experience F1 on the largest screens available is evidently resonating well (check out our video discussing this exciting trend).

On the flip side, the triumph of F1 is proving detrimental to Blumhouse’s M3GAN 2.0, which is set to debut with a meager $10 million, significantly lower than the $30 million opening weekend of its predecessor. Currently, it finds itself vying for the fourth position with 28 Years Later, which is experiencing a dismal 67% drop in ticket sales during its second weekend. Such numbers are certainly not favorable. Meanwhile, Pixar’s Elio is anticipated to outperform both films for third place, projected to earn around $11 million. The second spot seems secure for How to Train Your Dragon, expected to bring in approximately $18.5 million, potentially surpassing the $200 million mark by the end of the weekend.

While the $55 million debut of F1 might not be considered monumental, the positive word-of-mouth buzz could give the film an advantageous edge in exceeding expectations throughout the weekend. The studio is likely optimistic that the upcoming 4th of July weekend will provide a significant boost, as audiences who may not be interested in Jurassic World: Rebirth might opt to check out F1 instead. The film has garnered rave reviews, including our own, and it certainly deserves to achieve major success at the box office.
